Been thinking about this for some time ! the fridge in my van works of 240v 12v & gas !
Works great of 240/ 12v never run it on gas & dont think i want to! Went to pickering steam rally last year with no EHU so ran fridge of 12v ! Ange said it was'nt working so with a bit of a rewire in the fuse box I got it to work, now this is great BUT as most of you know it's not thermastatically controlled on 12v so it will keep running untill it flatterns the battery & every thing will freeze + flattern battery !
So I've been toying with the idea of putting a 12v programable timer in line, 1 to keep temp down & 2 not to run battery down as fast, as i dont want to carry a jenny about !
Any thoughts or tips ???? is it a or a

The 12V mode is only meant for running off the car whilst towing. That's why it didn't work when you were parked up. As you've found, if you re-wire it to run off the battery you will just end up with a flat battery.

If it's not been used for a while on gas, (like mine) if may not work (like mine), the gas jet gets blocked by rust, spiders webs & the like so you may have to do a bit of a clean-out job. Don't be tempted to poke the gas jet hole clear with anything, just use air.

New there was a rezun why I did'nt want to run of gas ! It's not piped up! lol
That's why I thought of putting a 12v timer in line ! 1hr on 2hr off ! Or time it just so it keeps temp down between 1-4 degre just like house fridge, + that way not useing battery power 24/7 if you know wot I mean?

Fair enough. A bit of a surprise to me that your caravan is fitted with a gas fridge that isn't connected to the gas! Maybe you could get a local caravan technician to have a look and sort it out for you?
The 12v on a 3 way fridge is not meant to be used to cool it down or keep it cool for any length of time.
The whole idea of the thing was to have it on 240v mains at home and to use that overnight to bring the fridge down to temp. This requires the caravan to be hooked up to the house ofcourse.
Then, in the morning you pack the fridge and set off. The 12v "from the car's alternator" then keeps the fridge at a basic low temp until you reach your destination.
Then you either set it going again on EHU (240v mains) or on Gas.
The 12v system in the caravan that runs the fridge and recharges the caravan battery is a totally different system to the 12v one that runs the lights, water pump etc and the two of them should never be wired up into the same system.

Hi L/D
The vans that old it has'nt got a charger!

No charger is required to charge the caravan battery from the car. The caravan battery is usually connected to the car alternator via the grey socket and a relay, thus charging the battery when the engine is running. This all assumes that your car and caravan are wired correctly if course.
