This may sound like a silly question so I apologise in advance but Google is not providing the answers in this case!
We're going to Cornwall in a couple of weeks in the van for our Summer holiday. We plan to travel down during the early hours to miss some of the traffic and so the children can sleep for the majority of the journey. We expect to arrive around 9-10am however we can't pitch up until 2pm.
Ideally I would like to find a car park in Padstow or somewhere en route that will allow us to park the car and van up so we can spend the morning and have lunch somewhere before heading the campsite in the afternoon.
Does anybody have any recommendations? All the council car parks I've found say not suitable for tourers but I'm hoping others have had this quandary and found a solution.
Unfortunately not! They offer a facility to allow you onto the pitch early for a fee but only if the pitch is empty from the night before and ours are booked.
The other thing to consider is that unless you can fit a specific hitch lock to the outfit when left unnatended in a car park, in your absence some potential thief could come along, unhitch the caravan and steal it within minutes.
I've read somewhere that Tesco are pretty good. There is also a petrol station on an industrial estate that may be able to help. Google and phone these places?
The other thing you could do is look at service stations along the way, and see if you could stop a bit sooner before you wanted to, but where there is a decent parking bay.
If nothing else turns up you could as above time your journey with a couple of 2 hour stops so that you arrive at the required time.
The last one for 2 hours could be This one
I would stagger the journey with a few long stops. I did this when taking caravan on my own to Scotland with kids. Left early and took a few long stops along the way. Got to site 5 mins before allotted time. MAde a game with kids too look out for somewhere to stop. We had a fantastic holiday by the way too!
There are some new services opened on the A30 between Newquay and Bodmin, not used them but have been told they are good with caravan parking bays. You may be able to stay for a while but they will be busy depending what day you are travelling. Which site are you going to ?
as the journey time is only 4 1/2 hrs from Leicester why not just leave around 7am? you wouldn't have this problem then although will have to put up with the "are we there yet"
There's a big park and ride field next to Tescos on the way in to Padstow that would probably suit. The Tesco car park isn't that big and they might have a problem with you leaving your caravan there.
Failing that the pay and display car park about 2 minutes walk from the town centre is easily big enough and if you're there early enough then access shouldn't be a problem.
A phone call to the tourist board as suggested would let you know one way or another though.
I was going to suggest the park and ride car park but I don't know if they would let a caravan in.I doubt you would be able to park a caravan in the pay and display car park, also you may be able to get in when its quiet but you may not be able to get out when it has filled up.
I wouldnt leave my caravan even with all the locks and alarms on it, esp in just a car park it only takes the professional thieves seconds to get them off
I would suggest leaving a bit later then stopping somewhere between 8am and 9am while the worst of the traffic clears then stopping again for an hour around lunchtime and time your arrival at the site for when you can go straight to your pitch. Do not leave the caravan unattended in any car parks as you risk it been stolen.
I wouldn't leave my caravan hitched up to the car in any car park anywhere!! I would stop in a lay by if you are too early, have a rest maybe play games with the children or do something to occupy them. So many caravans are taken when they are left unattended in car parks
