Can anyone relate to this? We are first timers and have been on a few local weekend trips however as a passenger when towing - my stomach is in knots - I stress the whole journey (my husband is very confident at towing) I constantly tell him he's too close to the kerb or to keep wide on roundabouts etc. does it get better? I don't find it at all relaxing - help!!
I am totally with you on this one.
We did Yorkshire to Cornwall for a week, towing there I was a nervous wreck, and didn't sleep the night before.
Hubby drives for a living, he is very relaxed about it, although as we pulled into the campsite, he said to me "the guy behind has been right on my bumper all the way here!" he thinks he is funny!
I have to say I was much more relaxed on the way back, and we are soon off to Norfolk, and I am not so stressed about the 4 hour journey this time.

Thank you for your message, I was thinking I was the only one who felt this way! Everyone tells me it's relaxing etc and I am not all relaxed! I was all for giving up! But my husband loves it!
Women passengers! My missus is the same. She tells me one way at a roundabout, Mrs Sat Nav tells me another, the dog goes crazy and Im sandwiched between two Stobarts. . .
Mind you, didnt help when i hit a bridge at Conwy Castle. . .
Hope shes calmed down now!
------------- Peripheral people don`t have as much excitement but they sure live longer
It reminds me of somebody who once panicked before their holiday and said, "I'm frightened of flying!" and the reply was, "Oooooh! you don't want to be frightened of flying.... You wan't to be frightened of crashing!"
On a serious note though, I asked my wife if she is worried at all when I'm towing the caravan and her reply was that she's more worried when we are towing on the motorway. I don't know why.
I don't let my hubby tow and it's drives him mad!!! He's my co-driver when the satnav decides the quickest route is down a single track road - I always print off my route and have a quick look on google earth to get an idea of roads, number of roundabouts etc. I've towed a horse trailer for years so feel more relaxed knowing I haven't got 2 tonnes of impatient horses behind me!! It can be a bit unnerving when lorries/coaches overtake but you'll get used to it. Enjoy x
The first few miles of any journey when towing can be nervous, all the thoughts of, have we forgot something, did we hitch up correctly, is everything working correctly and just getting used to the large box on the back. The more journeys you do, the more confident you will become. When we bought our first van 4 years ago, the wife would not tow it as the outfit was too large, now I hardly ever get to tow unless it is a long journey. Enjoy your escapes in the van, the unease of towing will subside as you become more confident.
My husband doesn't tow . I know when we first set off I can see he is gripping on to the door handle and is nervous.
Yet when we arrive at our destination he says you drove very well.
I never mind if he tells me I'm too close or move over . Or if he reminds me of speed checks etc. I think it keeps me alert and gives him something to concentrate on.
I'm not nervous but always watch my speed and don't like the feel of any unstability .
A caravan is big enough and can be seen by others . So as long as you keep to the correct speed , lanes etc . Also I find on roundabouts I mostly go round the outer edge rather than crossing lanes to go right then needing to cross lanes again to leave the roundabout causing a drag into other lanes.
If you are a driver have a go at towing yourself to gain confidence.
No I don't like flying either.
Have a go yourself if you can drive. Going on the CC 1 day course and sharing the towing cured my nervousness as a passenger although my nerves always settled a short way into the journey.
I am always more alert when oh is towing and looking out for potential problems. I think when you are as long as we are (40ft) you need to be alert. Its amazing how many other road users think we can
-see eveywhere even the back of 'van
-stop on a postage stamp
and do 70mph on a steep hill either going up or down!
So I will stay alert cos its not oh I worry about ...its others using the roads!
I am with you totally on this. My hubby is also a 'very confident at towing' as he tows a trailer every day, but it doesn't matter if the trailer gets scratched etc, unlike my precious caravan. I don't particually like his driving anyway (always too close on motorways etc) so after half a dozen trips I came up with the perfect solution...... I now tow while he falls asleep in the passenger seat.... we all arrive safely at the campsite safe, in one piece and far less stressed. Its worked for us now for over 6 years... give it a go
