So I bought a caravan from a local dealer in Derbyshire. He seemed like a nice guy and was very helpful during the sale. He promised a full safety check prior to collection and to show me everything before I left. And said there's be a 3 month Warranty via third party company. So upon collection he showed me lots of stuff and my head was spinning, it wasn't plumbed in but everything had passed the point check. I asked for the inspection documentation but he didn't have but he'd mail it me. SO 2 weeks later and lots of messages and still no documentation. Also the Water pump didn't work, badly wired wiring not covered by Warranty apparently. So I paid for the wiring to be fixed through a local approved mobile service , Pump then sent water in to the system which then leaked behind the tap. Taps probably aren't covered by Warranty and engineer didn't have a tap so still not fixed and cost £118. So does any one know where I stand with the 'dealer'? He's not a 'proper' dealer hes a man with a field and 20 caravans in it, and a nice website. The warranty is via A1, which have a few complaints on the net about nothing actually being covered by them, which is what seems to be true here too...
no i was looking at the wyoming but after a few text etc about money and a motor mover fitted for 500 i back away, somthing told me not to go for it. A twin axle mover cost at least 2k ?
Also my other half found him on another site trading from Draycott as well as little eaton.
I would get in touch with trading standards see what they have to say about it.
I can't see a resolution outside litigation. Dealers pay for these sort of warranties which basically lets the dealer off the hook. These sort of low end dealers of cars, caravans, motorhomes and so on are basically without conscience, I used to meets loads of them when I drove a car transporter for a car auctions. We use to call one bloke 'selectamileage', he bought cheap megamileage cars and clocked them all, he did get nicked in the end.
They know just about nothing about what they are selling and have no interest in what they sell, once they have the punters money they will fob them off until taken to court. This is probably the sort of bloke you are dealing with.
I would get the caravan fixed properly and hand him the bill, give him 7 days to pay or take him to small claims court. I guess you probably won't and tbf it probably ain't worth it buts thats usually the only way with these sort people.
I would get the caravan serviced by a proper caravan mechanic and learn a bit of diy to fix the interior bits yourself.
Hi. I hope you have this resolved now. We were ripped off to the tune of £20,000 by this cowboy. We bought a caravan from him Bailey Retreat Sycamore. Not towable, hard to get serviced and warranty work done! The first morning we woke up i stepped into a puddle of water. Called MS and he said - use the warranty to get it fixed. New back hatch needed. Can't get anybody to repair this caravan as nobody has the facilities to house such a large van. We had it serviced by a local Bailey approved mobile man. He pointed out the floor had 60% water ingress! After months of arguments with Bailey we finally got them to arrange to pick the van up and take it back down to Bristol for warranty repair. In the meantime we've traded it in for something else. Avoid MS Enterprises like the plague, he's a conman. I wish we'd had the foresight to have it serviced as soon as we'd taken delivery. We could have just taken him to the court for our money back. The caravan was not fit for purpose.
I would contact watchdog see if you can get his mug shot on the hall of shame.
Do not get it fixed and hand him the as been suggested, but offer him the chance to correct all the faults, get your mobile guy to go over it and list everything first though, so you can show him what needs to be done if he declines offer him to take the caravan back for full refund or you will be seeking further action chances are he has been investigated before. As for the water pump I don't think that could be included in any warranty anyway and I think he may be able to wriggle out of the leaky tap too as it is difficult to prove that it was leaking at time of purchase unless theres considerable damp caused by it.
Hope you get it sorted.
------------- its our imperfections that makes us perfect
Buying a used caravan can be a tricky experience - if it's in a field and there are a couple of white transits about and he has a small brick wall with gates and he appears to live in a caravan.
Then you are probably dealing with the wrong sort of person.
But that's up to you to decide.
Mind you the difference between that type of low life and some of the proper Caravan Dealers is that they don't need to live in a caravan and have a big house instead - paid for by you.
Basically they are all a bit suspect in my opinion - so beware who you give your money to.
Buying and selling used caravans is ripe with unsavoury characters.
I have posted several time on several caravanning web sites that the final purchase of ANY caravan from a Dealer OR private should be preempted with an pre purchase examination done by an INDEPENDANT mobile engineer .Unfortunatly the word does not seem to have spread to prospective buyers. It might cost a few quid but it could also save some poor buyers a small fortune
Having once been caught out myself I can only offer commiserations to those who are getting shafted
Just noticed this thread is still alive. So an update, I gave up on the dealer and paid for the tap to be fixed (£150). He'd glued the carpet down to hide floor delamination. (which we discovered when we ripped up the carpet to check the floor). I had the caravan serviced and there was a gas fault(so it obviously wasn't checked) which was fixed for about £50. Since then everything has been fine. By the sounds of it I got off lucky. I thought the dealer in question had gone out of business, but a quick google now shows he is now called M caravans, and has an even nicer website.
I checked the web site, I agree it looks good and I like the Swift Charisma but I am suspicious as it is a 2011 caravan and there is no mention of a Swift Warranty. My 2010 Swift is still under warranty.
------------- We camped for years. In 2019 we bought an Elddis Avante 454. We like it as it is short (6.9m) and fits in our driveway and has a fixed bed.
We had 127 nights away in the caravan in 2023.

The Swift 10 year warranty is for the original purchaser. If you bought yours second hand, then I'm afraid the Swift warranty expired at the 6 year point. The 2011 van may have expired too.

True, but we bought our caravan when it was 2 years old and the dealer agreed to honour the ten year warranty.
