Hello everyone,

Not sure what to make of an email I just received but I'll give you a bit of song and a pinch of verse so you get what im on about.

So, a loca site has refused our booking.... Here's why I'm peeved.

The situation - we're moving out of our house on the 31st and into my mums as her eyes aren't great anymore, but it's a big old gaff so we're having a load of work done to make 2 houses out of one and bang an extension or two on. So that happening now and making the whole place uninhabitable for Feb and prob first week of March

The solution - Get in the old caravan for a month and go stay at the nicest local site we know of! Hell, it's the dream right? We love caravanning and it makes sense as we couldn't delay our move out date or get somewhere for such a short term

The problem - after a week, 3 phone conversations and an email they've just said no. What's annoyed me most is I was absolutely up front with them on the initial conversation, it me, my good lady wife,
6 year old daughter, 2 year old son and a spaniel, it's for all of Feb and poss a week of March but we have family to visit in half term so no worries on the 28 day thing, oh and we have a Hobbby 650. So that's fine they say, Mr Site owner will call tomorrow for all details, he calls and we have the same conversation, no problem, he'll email me and we'll get it all confirmed.

No email

I call today, yep oh sorry we forgot, still fine, I'll send it now, we even discuss me storing the van there for a week before as I need the driveway for access on move day.

Email comes

We regret we can't help because we can't have a child living on site and obviously attending school.

Really? If this is a legitimate reason then why the hell wasn't this said on the first conversation?

Fuming, thought it was sorted now probably going to end up paying for a hotel for a month as all the other local sites are shut or not upto standard for our needs.

Also I apologise for wasting 2
Minutes of your time reading my rant but it's off my chest atleast!

You probably won't need to book sites this time of yr outside bank hols. Find another site & turn up as a tourist or just book as a tourist. There's no need to tell them your business. If caravan is over length for their site then a different matter but check campsite website for any rules about caravans beforehand.

Well that's what I thought regarding it being out of season, obviously most sites wouldn't care aslong as I paid my money but just thought it best to be straight up as it would be hard to pretend to be a tourist taking my girl to school on the morning!

Clearly I was wrong, honesty is not the best policy!

You can always move caravan sites halfway through your stay. I say go as a tourist.

Problem is we're very very limited on choice, area wise being based in Reading. There's barely any as it is. This site was already a 35 minute trip to my daughters school

It wouldn't surprise me if they are nervous of your overall situation, siting a Hobby to live in short term. They may have traveller concerns and don't want to take any risk.

Im pretty sure its for those reasons too. But really, they could have killed it off in the first conversation rather than agree everything.

Offering to pay with lucky white heather probably did not help your cause.

We, when I was a local councillor, came across a pertinent issue to your problem. We could not move a caravan family from a field after they had managed to register a child in the local school. That action which they knew well about, prevented further action in their removal.
So your site owner could well have found out that same information late in the process of offering to take you. Armed with that knowledge and knowledge of why you wanted the pitch could be reason enough not to expose themselves to problems should your project hit any time hitch?
Our problem was more than 16 years ago, the family are still there and have been joined by a host of like minded families!

If you're paying then why would they want to remove you from site? If I was the campsite owner you could stay indefinitely. Gypsies too, just show me the money :-)

Racist????
Suspicious yes.
Why do you have to move out your house?
Why can't you take your mum in until the work is over?
I think jtqu is on the right lines.
Well done the site owner for being polite and obviously looking into what may happen long term.

Move out - Landlords sold it, as I told them and offered proof if needed

Mum - because we don't have a house for ourselves let alone anywhere to put her. Awnings are cold this time of year. besides she's buggered off to my villa whilst the works going on to visit my nan. An option id take if little lady didn't have to go to school

I'm pretty far from a gypsy. I just wanted to live in the caravan for a month as it would be fun, as it is we've now got a month of the local Hilton to look forward to, which although very nice, is boring as hell to me

That makes sense, I'm now just very disappointed as I was very looking forward to it!

My daughter goes to a private school I don't know if they're exempt from local council type things? But that's all irrelevant now I suppose
