We have just paid 1.00 extra a night for our porch. I know many sites charge extra and I don't mind paying, but I don't see why! We were on a hard standing and there was loads of room for our van, porch and car. I don't know why the extra charge was made as we didn't exceed our pitch size. If we'd put our canopy up instead, there would have been no extra as its not enclosed! I'm sure someone will have an explanation, but it's beyond me!
If its part of their charging structure - that is the reason. Bottom line they could charge everyone £1 more and noone would notice apart from regulars I guess
Its the overall cost to ,y stay that would be key to me.
Crack open a beer and enjoy the Spring :)

It could be that they are covering the cost of repairing any damage to the grass if that's what the awning is on,quite a few sites are charging extra for awnings, full or porch,I ask if they want me to put a breathable groundsheet down,I have been on sites where they don't want you to use a ground sheet at all, some wont allow gazebos,we take everything into account when booking, not as bad as some dog friendly site owners charging £4/5 per night per dog in the peak season,
To me - especially hard, pitches, should be one cost, for whatever you can fit on them. To charge a twin axle monster for the pitch only, and then charge something like an Eriba with an awning extra, is a pi$$ take.
Its like charging a bloke of 10 stone for extra luggage at the airport, while the 20 stone woman behind him pays nowt because shes not 'over'. When in reality she is 'over', except none of it is in her suitcase. If we are paying for fuel - weigh you AND your bags!
If you pay for a pitch, it should be up to you what you put on it.
we whent to scotland over the easter brake we paid for the porch awning but never used it becouse the wether was so bad but hay ho its just one of them things but it is day light robery when u pay for a pitch and still have to pay more for extras
Sennen26 has it right. They charge extra for awnings.........because they can! The same as many charge per person too.
We have recently returned to caravanning after a break of many years. When we last had a caravan, most sites charged for a pitch and that was it. What you put on it was up to you, provided that you didn't overlap adjoining pitches. The number of people was irrelevant, provided that you didn't exceed the number your unit was designed for. In those days we had three children, and one of the main reasons we took up caravanning was because it cost no more for 5 people than it did for one. You paid for the pitch. Very few had EHU at all, and a few had maybe 5 pitches with electricity, which was often on a meter. Much has changed, apparently.
same goes for charging for dogs...i have yet to see a pooch wandering off to the shower block with his towel draped over his arm ...don't give me it costs to empty the poo bins ,what else would the staff be doing?
We went on a certificated site two years ago to which the site owner charged £2.00 per night for a porch awning (which we had) and £2.50 per night for a full awning. I queried the reason why there was a difference in price as an awning is more or less the same distance in depth from the caravan side. The owner said that it's the groundsheets that damages the grass and the area covered by a full awning is bigger thus the extra charge. I explained that we don't use a groundsheet so no damage will occur during our stay to which he accepted and decided to waive the awning fee.
So it all depends on the campsite owner but if you are prepared to ask rather than just accept, the fee may be waived providing you have a constructive reason not to pay the extra charge. However, regarding extra charges for awnings on hardstandings is proof that it's no more than a rip off as the stones under foot don't need any attention after the last visitor has departed so the fee should be scrapped on those grounds (excuse the pun).
There's a possibility that what started this off is since large tents have been produced which campers with large tents consume more space than a caravan with awning so the site owner began charging for the pitched area taken. That would have caused some controversy as campers with huge tents were probably paying more than a caravan so to make it fair the site owners just increased the charge for an awning which basically is a tent attached to the caravan.
