Hi just looking for some advice, I know this might seem a bit of a newbie question. Planning to fit a snakemaster stabiliser to my car and caravan and am wondering what type of plate i need to get. Have been on the Towsure site and can see what plates etc I need to fit it but it has different kinds (steel which is the plate is bolted on or aluminium frame where the plate is clamped on) So what I am wondering is how do I find out what type of frame I have?
If you have a fixed flange towbar (2 x 16 mm. mounting bolts) then the stabiliser back plate bolts directly to the towbar flange. The back plate has six holes to adjust the height setting but only two holes are use for the fixing. Once the back plate is bolted to the towbar flange, the leaf spring stabiliser is attached directly to the mounting plate.
If you have a swan neck or detachable towbar then a leaf spring stabiliser such as the 'Snakemaster' cannot be used.
Hey Tango55 thanks for that mate Yeah that's the kind of one that im going to fit. It came of the old caravan but didnt manage to get the piece on the car off so just left it lol So am i better with the boltable type of chassis plate or the clampable style of chassis plate?
One says it's for a steel A frame and the other one for an aluminium A frame, just not sure which type of frame I have? lol Any idea how i can find out what type of frame I have on my caravan?

A frames are always steel. Use the clamp on plate, it's easier to fit as no drilling required & some chassis should not be drilled.
I believe the OP is talking about the mounting plate on the Car's Towball and not the plate on the Caravan.
Yeah im needing both the plate for the car which the stabiliser slots into and the one for the caravan which the other end of the snakemaster goes into.
I was fine with the one for the car, it was the one for the caravan I was concerned about but Opensauce put me right on that one.
If your caravan hitch is identical to any of the ones shown in the link below then it will be a stabiliser hitch which has internal friction pads which will do the same job as a leaf spring stabiliser. It's an advantage as there's no clamping or drilling required plus there's no need to find extra storage space when the stabiliser is not in use.
Hi Tango, Pad stabilisers are okay when all you are towing is the one trailer, but they are useless if you tow more than one type of trailer and leaf spring stabilisers are far easier to maintain and adjust.
We have used both types in the past and we now choose to use leaf spring every time.

Thats news? I have the very same stabiliser with a bracket that fitted my detachable towbar on my previous car. In fact it is in my garage at this moment. It was never the easiest thing to fit but it does exist it is legal and it works.

Brian, just noticed mate I'm only down the road from you (Stonehouse), I might possibly have the plate for your car and the one for the van pretty sure I have already taken it off. Your lucky was going to ditch them just the other week. If they are any good to you they are yours. Have you got a snake master? I will have a look tomorrow just to make sure it is all still there and take a photo, am off work Thursday so can meet up with you anytime if you want the bits.
