Hi not been on here for years, looking for some advice please on monthly costs. So we are looking at puchasing a budget touring caravan, but have no idea on monthly costs i.e. Storage and insurance. Any advice on caravaning on a budget would be appreciated. TIA.
No legal requirement to insure a caravan but a cheapie, £1-2000 off ebay sort of thing only about £70 pa to insure if you want to. Nobody is going to steal a cheap caravan so find a local farm or similar would be cheaper than secure storage.
If you do get a cheap one budget for new tyres & chassis service & check for damp obviously.

Storage charges in a secure compound will vary according to the level of security offered. A mid range price might be around £100 per quarter. For insurance, its like anything else, it depends on the van, and the equipment included, so best get some quotes.
Do check out pitch fees though. If you haven't around a while, you might be quite shocked at recent price rises. It can be quite an expensive hobby these days.
Thank you for the info. I went on a quote site last night an no one was offering insurance for the caravan I'm interested in. I'm not bothered about covering the cost of it being stolen. What would insurance cover other than that? Say if we had an accident whilst towing is it my car insurance that would cover that? If so I take it you need to inform my car insurance?
Am I thinking about £20 per night for electric hook up, is this about right?
We are looking at about three caravan holidays per year an once a month a weekend away. The caravan holidays we could continue to do at havens etc. However I rescued a lab beagle last year and no longer have a dog sitting, so the weekends are non existent now so hoping this is the solution!
If you joined the C&CC or CC you could use their CS,s or CL,s in which case £20/night would be sufficient. It would also cover the cost of many private sites as well.
If however you wanted to use the larger commercial sites with all the facilities, it would probably cost £30 plus per night.
If you were to be involved in an accident/incident whilst towing your caravan, your car insurance would not cover any damage to your caravan.
Being state pensioners we are caravanning on a budget too. Our van cost us £500 on ebay back in 2013, and we have just had our third year of holidays with it. Our insurance cost us £72 a couple of months back, and its with the camping & caravan club's insurers. They also cover our car, as they were the most competitive.
This is a good time of year for buying a cheapie. Usually loads about on ebay. Just remember that a £1,000 van is not necessarily better than a £500 one, and a £2,000 one is not necessarily better than either.
Its definitely worth checking out any that you can get to see relatively easily. Take a damp-meter with you, and allow for replacing the tyres if they are more than 5 years old.
Ohh damp meter never heard of one of those for a. Arabian only for brick walls! How does that work if your only looking do you not need to leave it there a while? Or do you touch the walls with it? How do you deal with the damp over the winter months? I take it you remove all the soft furnishings?
When caravan is parked over winter months air needs to circulate around interior. No need to remove cushions but stand them on edge if you can & leave cupboard doors open to allow air to circulate through floor vents.
I'm guessing it depends how long you don't use it for over the winter months. I think I'd leave them on end over the winter months anyway to be safe an I intend using it perhaps once a month.
