Can anyone please recommend a good satnav that will allow you to use roads suitable for towing a caravan along?
Having had a less than successful experience in Sometset using my Tomtom start, I don't want to divert through farm tracks to save 200 yards.
Tomtom used to do a satnav where you could select between car, campervan, truck and a route would be calculated accordingly (how clever) but now they have discontinued it and I cannot find an alternative

Garmin camper does the job, tomtom used to do a camper version that was very good but they stopped making it

They do however make a truck version where you input your outfit dimensions or set to various vehicle types. Not cheap though!!! I have successfully used a TomTom Start 60 with the Camper maps added for some years now.

The Garmin truck version is, well, for trucks - its large. Nor is the screen as clear as the Camper, which tells lies - yes you can put in your outfit size, but it takes not a blind bit of notice.

Garmin actually advised increasing the input dimensions to fool the Camper device into assuming a larger outfit, but that didn't work either

You really need a decent road map as well to be fair.

Also, you have to remember wagons sometimes have to go down 'farm tracks' for delivering etc, so why would a 'suitable' sat nav not take you down?
Why do you see so many foreign wagons over here stuck on impossibly narrow roads and turnings, despite having satnavs? You have to look at signs and keep your eyes open.

The top and bottom of it boils down to how narrow you are comfortable driving down. Some folk want too much room, others will be prepared to breathe in a bit here and there. Its usually when you are very near your destination (unless in rural France) when the sat nav decides to have a bit of fun. Here is where you need the map most to avoid losing your mirrors.

Recently, i had to divert from the motorway onto back roads to get home from rural Lancashire. I kid you not when i say i traversed tarmac roads that were narrower than the truck, and thanked god i didnt have the 'van on the back at the time.

3years ago I had a tomtom start and not very happy with it. Someone on another forum recommended a Noza Tec. I was very cynical about it cos it was on eBay for about £35. They are now about £55. I thought well for that money I will try it. It's brilliant! You can set it up as if you are a lorry or towing a trailer or just as a car. There are lots of settings for different sounds and warnings etc. I am very pleased with it. It's also caused loads of amusement when it told me I was over the speed limit .( I soon changed that setting). Also it's funny to hear the different voices. E.g. Mandarin ,Irish ,American. Don't be put off by the low price.

Thanks for all the useful replies, I like the sound of the Nozatec.
Tomtom are now very frustrating because I would need to spend a fortune to get the same as they used to offer but decided to discontinue.

I had a Garmin Camper Satnav which was unfortunately stolen.

Haven't replaced it since it tried to take me over many unsuitable roads just like a standard satnav, especially in the Lakes.

Now I use the satnav I had before the Camper, also a Garmin, and spend a little time on Google Maps Streetview if I'm going somewhere new and rural. This worked very well for me during 3 weeks of camping in Wales.

I just use WAZE which is a free download on my phone. Roads are bang up to date, destinations always spot on as it uses Google and as a big bonus it routes you round bad traffic.

Unfortunately it doesn't allow for towing but that's a matter of keeping you eyes open and using common sense.

Must say, I'm finding the Garmin Camper pretty good ... only tested for three weeks in France, but infinitely better than my built in VW SN.
