Hi everyone first time buyer. I am due to buy a 1990 abbey oxford at the weekend but has damp problems in the end toilet/shower. I believe it's coming in from the joins as I looked briefly and to me it looks like the sealant had perished away in parts. I was thinking of doing the inside repairs myself but I am nervous about the outside. Also the lady has apparently never used the water in the caravan as always parked close to the facilities. So I don't know if the water heater etc works. Apparently everything else does. Should I buy or save and buy a different one? How much would you pay for it ? Thank you
It would depend how long the wet has been getting in. If the woodwork between outside skin & interior walls is extensively rotted then probably not worth buying. If there is plenty of discolouring on inside wall then don't buy it.
The outside is easy on an old caravan if you just want to bodge it. Clean seams with meths then apply PU sealant on exterior seam joins. If interior is not too bad then leave as is & just use caravan. You will not want to be paying much for this caravan though. Under £400 perhaps? For it to be roadworthy you may also need to budget at least for a chassis service & also new tyres if they are much over 5yrs old.

It apparen't got in the winter just gone as they didn't cover which they usually do. The caravan is £500 the inside has grey colour in the corners and the paper has come off.
Sounds like fairly extensive rot. Interior panels off & replace wood frame. Not expensive for materials but time consuming & reasonable ability with tools required. If you fancy that break it to them that caravan is worth no more than £200.
OK thank you. It does come with the attach on front motor mover and a few extras like chairs etc and I feel they may just shrug me off. A few of my family are bedroom designers and fitters so that wouldn't be a problem. Thank you for your advice. Appreciate it guys
The problem with damp is that you can't realise the extent (and the work to repair) until the wallboard in the affected area is removed and the extent of the problem revealed. The reason I suggested a damp meter was to give you an idea of all the affected areas. Before you fix the damp you'll need to stop the water ingress. Suggest you have a look atFixed it to give you an idea of repair. I think Opensauce has given a fair and realistic estimation of the vans value, the sellers will have difficulty selling it with damp, the extras mean nothing if the van is not habitable. Good Luck
Take into consideration that the vans 27yrs old ! My ABBEY is the same age & yes it had it's faults ! Resealed ALL the windows & nearly all the rails ( still got a couple to do next spring) re/vampt the kitchen & scraped the shower ! Still got a few bits to snag in the toilet area but it dunt stop us using it ! Next springs jobs include a new/sh axle toilet finished & may re/paint it !
So just because it's old dunt mean it's scrap ! It depends on how much you can do yourself ! & don't forget Rome weren't built in a day !

Very good response. I am just worried that I could be paying more than its worth but to me £500 is cheap. I know it's 27 years old and age doesn't bother me. I can get the jobs done myself and with help but also the water heater is bothering me as they apparently nevery used it and I don't know if it actually works. And I don't know how much or how easy parts are to get hold of I live in Derbyshire and don't know of any salvage/caravan scrap yards. I don't want to just write it off 🙄
You really need to be satisfied that everything is working on electric and gas if appropriate. Water supply to caravan (maybe an aquaroll with a submersible pump, caravan heater, caravan water heater, fridge electric and gas, cooker burners grill and oven. State of the battery age of tyres (not the tread - I do mean the age) does it come with a manual service history when was the last service etc. Please see Caravan and Motorhome Club leaflet Leaflet
The fridge works apparently on gas and electric and also the hob and cooker work. Everything apparently works as should just the water heater she says she never used. It has the water pump and barrels etc just she says she never bothered to use it. I am just nervous to mention maybe a lower price as she has holded it a week for me.
In 2013 there was a Abbey Oxford 1990 advertised at £1000 in mint condition on a well known auction site, it didn't sell but I think at that time for the age and condition it was realistically priced. Of course the price you pay is entirely up to you. You aren't buying it as a financial proposition but buying a caravan can be an expensive hobby for what used to be a cheap holiday. The water heater should work on electric if the gas doesn't work. If you go ahead I hope you enjoy the van - if you hit any problems use the forum.
There is one 1991 on a popular auction site at the moment with damp for £1500 i believe so I was thinking £500 is bad and I can do her up. Would feel cheeky trying to knock them down even if not worth it lol. Thank you I am sure you haven't heard the last of me lol thank you all. Very helpful in deed :)
Tell them you like the caravan but not the damp & not the price. At this time of yr its doubtful a dry one with extras like awning would make £800 on an ebay auction. Whatever, you are the poptential buyer feel free to make an offer without considering yourself cheeky.
The seller has a choice of selling for whatever they can get for it or letting it stand & rot. You have a choice of plenty of cheap caravans about this time of yr & you are bound to find one you can use without doing major & time consuming repairs.
