We are on a seasonal pitch, usually we unhook and drain down etc every time we leave. However, I’m going to be staying once or twice a week due to changing job. The site have said I can leave my electricity connected .... would you?

Would there be any disadvantage or risk. Should I still drain the water? I have alde heating if that makes a difference.

Would it change you opinion if I didn’t come so often - say I can’t get there for a week or so?

I dont see a problem with leaving the lecky connected as you have it on anyway however,i would drain down the water as you might get a cold spell with frost..

If your ehu is not metered then you could leave heating on to keep it warm for you & avoid things freezing up. If you don't want to leave main heating on then a free standing convector heater or oil filled rad on lower setting will keep the chill off.

I would have thought if heating is left on then no need to drain water. For it to freeze temp inside caravan would need to be below zero. Which it won't be with heating on.

I assumed the pipes go outside though and would freeze? I’m sure someone with a better knowledge of how caravans are actually made would know - I just use mine 🙂

The water from outside may freeze, but once it gets inside the van all pipes are internal.

Once thing you may want to consider would be to get a insulation jacket for your water barrel, it probably wont stop it freezing on a really cold spell (like we had six or so years ago) but the odd night of 0 or -1 will certainly help prevent the water from freezing.

If you have the water supply from aquaroll don't leave that connected but the rest of the water pipes are all internal & so is the flush tank in toilet so provided there is some warmth then no probs. Plenty use their caravans all yr round.

Yes we do have an aqua roll but also have the insulation bag as we use the van all year round, we just don’t usually leave it connected when we leave.

Its simple,if your leaving the barrel with water in it just take the pump out and keep inside.If your cable is connected all the year round i cant see a problem with leaving it on.

Keeping a heater on in the van will prevent things freezing like the taps.No heating in the van means if it freezes then there is a chance the taps will freeze If not draIned.

The problem I see is that water pipes run in seat lockers and under kitchen etc and these spaces are not necessarily heated. The kitchen for instance has the fridge vents so will definitely get cold.

Water in pipes which is regularly used will not freeze but if left for several days could do so.

I think these spaces are heated with alde heating, not sure about all of them are but some of my cupboards are the warmest place in the van lol. The radiators, or whatever you call them run behind things. When I open my kitchen drawer it’s like a little sauna.

The only thing that would worry me, is leaving heating & electric on, and being far away from the van?
In saying that we all go away at weekends, leave the van for hours on end and leave the heating on and electric, gas with no problems.
BUT!!
Its that one time we do it and return to a burnt out van.
Think it is up to you what you want to do.
Would insurance pay out if heating and electric is left on without any supervision?
Make sure you have it all covered before you make a decission.

We keep our caravan at home and have a 16A socket so can plug in the caravan.

Last winter I tried leaving it with a small convector heater in the toilet set on a frost setting and also left the water heater on the lowest possible temperature. We had no problem with any pipes freezing.
I know this was not an exact trial as I'm not sure how cold it got in Scotland last winter but I will try it again this year as it makes it so much easier to go away if everything is ready

We camped for years. In 2019 we bought an Elddis Avante 454. We like it as it is short (6.9m) and fits in our driveway and has a fixed bed.
We had 127 nights away in the caravan in 2023.

Do you go away from home without turning your electric, gas and water off? No different

Yes its aways on, and there is always someone at home.
And if we all go away, everything apart from the fridge freezer is switched off.
Which to me is common sence.

As i read it they where going to leave it on for weeks on end without anyone looking at it?

End of the day, your van house do as you like.
