we have a coachman 575 with a long sky light at the front that does not open .they say not to leave the blinds down in hot weather as it could warp the window
but then the van gets to hot.Anyone got any ideas please
We have a Coachman VIP 420 with the same window and blind. When the sun’s shining in the front we put the top blind down part way, and do the same with the 3 front window blinds, though we may have one or more of these windows open. Hopefully this is a reasonable compromise.
You need to open all your windows slightly in hot weather because the windows are manufactured in two separate halves and bonded to together. When the inner section sticks to the window sealing rubber the outer half will expand with the heat so any restrictions of the two halves not being able to expand and contract at the same rate will definitely break the bond causing window delamination. That's more reason for the windows to warp than the blinds being down, however, if you leave the blinds up then the strong sunlight will fade the upholstery.
I hate the sky lights . I just don’t see the point in them . They need to be closed at night . Also when very hot and sunny . So the only time they are of any use is in the rain or cold .
We have a swift conqueror and the heat has caused a lot of problems with a trim that warped and became unstuck . Some of the adhesive went on the blind and they stuck so couldn’t be pulled up or down .
This now needs to be replaced .
Try and find any caravan without these sky lights . I wouldn’t want to open one either . I prefer a row of cupboards along the front . .
you can use silicone spray ( the same stuff used on thetford toilets ) on the window rubbers.. Spray onto clean cloth then wipe over rubbers...This stops the windows sticking and keeps the rubbers nice and supple...
In this hot weather we have been experiencing, and long may it last, we have had all the windows open / skylights etc while the van is in the garden. Also while we are in the house we open the entrance door and pull the fly screen across....Keeps everything nice and cool.
I would also suggest a white sheet over the front of your van ( skylight area ) if you are experiencing major heat build up....may help deflect the heat.
The British ;- The only people who complain when its too hot, too cold , too wet , too icy, too much snow, not enough snow , too dry......are we unique ?? :)

I don't think any UK caravan has the option to open the front skylight above the front windows. We dislike ours due to the heat it allows in and to keep the caravan cool you need to pull down the blind.

I've seen loads of can with these huge skylights at the front and just assumed that they could be opened.
So not only can they not be opened, but they advise you to not roll down the blind as it can cause warping in hot weather.
Anyone else think this is a bit of a design flaw?
I mean ye they looks nice, but its more design over functionality.
These windows are a big con - and we are one of those who fell for it. Our Swift Challenger Sport came as a "special edition". pause for a laugh - and the high front window, which costs extra if ordered in place of the usual front locker, came as a freebie - is one of he most useless fittings I have come across. It doesn't open, and the blind must not be closed in hot sun as this can cause overheating of the window with damaging results.
I have considered white gloss paint on the outside window surface, but the boss says "NO." So we just live with it!

I couldn't agree more. I would never buy a caravan with these fitted.
Neither would we (again!) Robin. We are quite willing to be honest and say that, in choosing the van for being what we wanted, we gave little thought to this high level window. In the 6+ years we have had the van, we have learned from experience how useless and inconvenient it actually is. Simply changing it would be an unacceptable expense, so we plan around it, trying to position the van so as to get either the early morning or evening sun (when less fierce) and pull the blind almost fully down and risk it.

My post was in connection with the HEKI 2 skylight which is the large skylight in the ceiling that tilts upwards but after reading posts on this thread it appears that the OP was referring to the skylight in the newer caravans at the very front so my apologies for thinking it was a flat tilting skylight.
Well, tango55, the Heiki you refer to, and which is on our Swift Challenger, is inferior to the Heiki that was on our previous Coachman. If put in the intermediate (second) position, a gust of wind can whip it up to maximum height. Scary, due to risk of the retaining lugs being broken. There are no latching facilities as were on the Coachman. Cheapness over quality was an obvious factor IMHO.

The blind on our high level front window is fixed at the top, so any partially open section is at the bottom. Since heat rises, the hottest part of the window is the hot air trapped between the acrylic 'glass' and the blind.
It would have been more sensible for the blind to have had its fixed end at the bottom. Don't you just love caravan designers!!!
