Hi

Was just wondering who uses their vehicle most in a season in the UK...those who own motorhomes/campervans or those who tow a caravan....realise personal circumstances will affect the answer but would be good to hear from people who have owned both as to which one gets used the most.

Very difficult to answer I would think. I personally wouldn't buy a motorhome (not that I can afford one anyway) unless I intended to use it very frequently, like every weekend. Far too much money to have sitting around unused, but still taxed, MOTd and insured, as it would have to be a second vehicle.

As my caravan is kept at home it costs me nothing until I use it (site fees etc), except for the insurance which is next to nothing as my caravan is old.

Best Regards,
Colin

We use our caravan all year round, up early on a nice crisp frosty morning, cup of tea and then off for a cycle ride can't beat it!
Most of our caravanning is off grid even in winter, just 12v and gas.

For the purpose of the exercise I assume a caravan is being classed as a 'vehicle'?   If so, then my answer varies between caravan, camper van and motor caravan.
When we had a camper van, it was also my car, so was in regular use almost daily. Moving up to a motor caravan (Autosleeper Talisman), I had a small Fiesta as my car, so motor caravan used comparative little, but more than a caravan because readiness (e.g., no hitching up) made it convenient for very short outings. Going back to caravans, the caravan is used least of all.
So, to sum up:
Campervan - very much used.
Motorcaravan - much less so.
Caravan - least of the three.
Bertie.

Yes Bertie am referring to a caravan as a vehicle for these purposes...I have a caravan and use it for 10-15 trips per year...was wondering if i'd get out more if the vehicle was either a) on my drive and b) easy to hitch up as it's in storage and have to go through numerous security gates just to get it and hitch it up so less spontantinaty....do love it though when on site and have all it's comforts plus the car to go exploring the local area

Hi
Caravan keep it at home still, at the moment.
Used for 40+ nights this year, in fact Oct is the only month we are not going away.
But that could change lol.

I'm always surprised to see, once August is over, many caravans at my storage site with covers on - obviously mothballed until at least the next Easter.

For me, the best way to maintain a caravan and keep damp etc. at bay is to use the thing constantly; plus of course, why would anyone want to keep £20K of kit off the road for half the year (don't start me on the cost of motorhomes)?

I'm only semi-retired at the moment, but still take long weekends once a month at least, as well as a month's holiday in Europe. After a couple of weeks, I get an itch that can only be cured by camping.

We use our caravan for about 60 nights a year.

But, we don't store it at home.

Were hoping to use ours when we actually get it at least once a month, it will be in storage tho, but only 3mins away.

I wanted a camper van, Classic Hymer, but OH doesn't want an old clasic, so we are compromising on a van.

I'm hoping we will get as much use as everyone seems to, well we will get more use hopefully than our tent

Must admit we don't use ours much in winter as we like our home comforts once the weather turns. It was different when we were younger.

However, now that we are retired, we tend to use ours mainly when others don't. We go mid-week rather than weekends, school term times rather than school holidays, and definitely avoid bank holidays. Never go anywhere during August, but then that's when I am busiest volunteering on a Heritage Railway. We are hoping to get away again next month though, once the schools go back.

It's not that we are antisocial, far from it, but I do hate crowds, and you get a far better choice of pitches if you go when it's quieter. We've done the kids and school holidays bit, but now even some of our grandkids are adults.

Colin

Started 1954 only a boy then, but my dad would take caravan to mid Wales, and leave my mother and I there, until his holidays started, then join us and do a little touring, so caravan used more than car.

Father-in-law would winter in Spain in a large motor caravan, the reason was easy, cost of ferry crossing, it was cheaper than car and caravan.

But our tow car and caravan cost under £10,000 for the pair, I could not get a second hand motor caravan in that condition for that price, so if money no object yes may go for motor caravan, however we park caravan at back of house, we simply could not get a motor caravan same size in garden.

The tow car is only used when away with caravan, it is left parked up during school summer holidays. But the big reason why not using a motor caravan is we want a car that will fit into car parks. When we stop outside Shrewsbury and we want shopping we park in the multi story car park and walk into the shops without getting wet. Yes we could park other side of river and walk over the foot bridge. But prefer not to have to walk.

Chester is the same, if we used a motor caravan have to use Park and ride, with car and caravan we can access all car parks. Father-in-law would take push bikes to Spain, but not as cold there in the Winter.

My wife loves the craft fairs, so takes caravan to local site near the craft fair, again with motor caravan could not park in many of the car parks she uses.

So in the main the caravan is used more than motor caravan would be, as simply can't park motor caravan where we go.
