I have recently read a letter in the CAMC magazine from someone who has gone from a caravan to a motorhome/camper van. He was saying how pleased he was to have changed because it used to take 2 hours to set up and now it's 15 mins.
How on earth do you spend 2 hours setting up? The only difference I can see is unhitching and winding the legs down.

I suppose it depends what you have to set up. First there's the caravan to level. EHU to connect, water to fetch and connect up, and the gas. That doesn't take long, but if you have an awning, awning floor, table & chairs, or any other awning furniture or accessories, these all add up. Then some people put up things like windbreaks etc.

The thing I find takes longest is pegging out the awning. If we go on a short break without using the awning, our set-up time is cut by two thirds.

takes up 30 mins including the awning! their is 2 of us and we both have own own jobs, him outside me inside its rare we deviate from that unless the wind is getting up and im needed as ballast!

I read that letter too and wondered just what takes up 2 hours...It takes us 20 minutes from unhitching to kettle on IF we have no awning, add 20 minutes for the awning.

MH has on board water and waste etc so only elec to connect. So drive onto pitch and ramp if needed. Connect electric, job done.

Caravan, reverse onto pitch in precise location her ladyship has chosen. Multiple attempt needed as she stands behind where I cannot see her to direct operations. Level, and fit locks.

Move van to new location as she has changed her mind.

Level and fit locks, water, waste, elec locks etc.

I reckon about 45 minutes usually for van with no awning.

Well there must be a lot of caravanners on here much fitter than us. I would say it takes us 30 minutes with no awning, and probably a further hour to set up the awning. This is largely because of our fitness, or rather lack of it! Pegging out the awning, my job, is what takes me the time. If I could just work at it continuously as I would once have been able to, I could probably cut the time in half, but I have to keep stopping to rest an aching back and my dodgy hip.

Getting the caravan onto the pitch seems to take us the longest time. The way many sites are set out nowadays with narrow roadways or pitches so short that the caravan opposite you is overhanging the front of their pitch all make reversing the caravan onto the pitch more difficult or virtually impossible. This adds to the set up time as we then have to engage the mover, use it to position the caravan and then disengage it.

However, even having to do this, it takes us about 30 minutes from start to finish to have the caravan positioned and connected and ready to use and a further 30 minutes for the awning (minus the pegging out which takes an age with my dodgy back and my husbands dodgy leg).

I once read on here about a woman who set about cleaning the caravan as soon as they got home, took her 4 hours! must have done it with a toothbrush.

We have been away with in our van with cousins with MH and they are quicker to set up but not a massive difference.It is pretty obvious really.
The merits of each produce lengthy posts on here,
We are teased about it until they want us to do the chip or newspaper run in our car!

MH have to be level too, that can be fun to watch forward a bit back a bit then forward then back many times oh we are not level sideways just like a caravan. Sometimes they get lucky 1st time. Then wind out the awning that's the easy part its putting the sides on that takes the time, then they still have all the bits to put in it like caravanners.

We can set up in 15 mins overnight or 40 mins approx with awning.

I want a German van pull up use mover to place it use electric levers to level it, no water only use kettle at tap bucket for waste ehu connected all done in 10 mins. Sorry forgot unload bikes.

I level the caravan , we thread awning , give the wife the pump to pump it up peg it out together about 40 minutes and we are OAP'S

We are OAPs too Black Fox. It takes two of us to thread the awning through the channel, but then my wife goes in to get the kettle on! I finish off putting the awning up. Surprisingly, I find that the awning we have now, a full awning with metal poles, is actually easier to put up than the poled-porch-awning or the air-porch-awning we had before. Probably because it comes in 5 pieces. The main roof section, two sides, and two front sections. However, all of the awnings took a similar time to peg out, lay the flooring, put the curtains up, and put out the table and chairs. I'd be over the moon if I could finish it in 40 minutes!
