just arrived back from having a nice weekend,however felt sotorry for 3 caravaners,1st one pulls onto site,unhitched van and then went to connect the motor mover,while he was doing that his car started driving off,think he must have left in drive,as he chased car,the caravan then started rolling away down the hill,quite a bit of damage done but lucky no one was injured,we all helped to get him set up,but felt sorry for him,2nd caravan pulled off pitch and as he turned right took out 3rd caravan,again damage but no one injured,so all please take care,accidents can happen so quickly.

If the driver had used the vehicle hand brake the car wouldn't have drove off on it's own it's as simple as that. That's exactly what it's there for but many idle drivers don't bother to use it and then it becomes a bad habit and bad practice as well. When stationary at traffic lights, all the vehicles in front have their brake lights illuminated which is proof that the majority of drivers don't use their hand brake. I've been in the habit of using mine since I passed my driving test in 1983 and still do today.

Wife has to hold her foot on the brake regardless whether she uses the hand brake or puts it in (P)ark for the auto stop - start function to do it's thing...

If I've got my car in drive I usually keep my foot on the brake even with the handbrake on. Probably just a habit. However, if I'm going to be stationary for more than 30 seconds or so I usually take it out of drive and take my foot off the brake. Handbrake would be on anyway. I would never even think of getting out of the car without putting it in park first, and putting the handbrake on.

Many modern cars have electronic auto handbrakes now. No need to even go into Park. When the car comes to a halt, the auto handbrake kicks in. No roll/movement until you activate the accelerator again... and the brake lights go off as you sit idle (assuming you remove your foot from the foot brake, of course!)

...I presume, however, that they could fail?

wait till you try the new merc sprinters then. first, the gears are on the right hand stalk.

foot on brake, up for reverse, down for drive.

the button on the end of the stalk is for park.

however, you then have the flappy paddles on the wheel for selecting gears too...

if you open the drivers door whilst in drive, it automatically shifts to park.

if you tap the brake pedal twice whilst stopped, it goes into hold and doesnt move till you either tap the brake again or accelerate.

and to top it, when you stop, you just hit the off button and it auto shifts to park.

Actually yes. New drivers are not taught to use the handbrake when waiting at lights or roundabouts.
It's called 'stopping to go, or stopping to stop'.

Things change I'm afraid.

Personally I use my handbrake when it seems likely that the wait will be more than a few seconds. But I was taught advanced driving and was blue light traned so we built up different habits probably.

That certainly is a change Sprite83. When I learned to drive a bus back in 1973 I was taught "handbrake every time you stop". Must admit I don't always do that with my automatic car, unless I am stopping for more than 30 seconds, but I still occasionally drive a 1950s double decker and I do it with that every time.

My car has this system and very good it is too. However, I still have my foot on the brake at lights as that's the safest place for it. A very slight accidental touch of the throttle and the brake releases an you could be into the car in front

I once had a conversation with a Canadian about the use of handbrakes. They call them parking brakes and are taught to use them only when parked. They had to learn to do hill starts by proper use of the footbrake and accelerator.

I was taught the same. Car May 85, HGV Oct 91. The wife was also taught the same in Feb 2005 in an automatic. Put the handbrake on & car into neutral.
We both still do it today. I think people today just get a bit lazy/bad habit.
It's like the drivers you see who creep forward 3ft just because there's a little gap in front of them, or the others that continually roll back & fore waiting for traffic lights to change. Everyone's in a rush nowadays.

My car has an electronic handbrake which works automatically when stationary. The brake lights stay on as it is activated by the foot brake. Many of those people may be doing the right thing. It took a bit of getting used to and didn't feel right on hills but it is a good system... unless you want handbrake turns. The only thing is that I have to remember to activate auto handbrake every time I get in. If not, I have to pull up the button to set the handbrake.
