Have to say I'm not a massive fan of hardstanding, I just prefer to be on grass. However, I've just booked a site for myself and the kids on the August bank holiday that only has hardstanding available. Hadn't thought about it til now but how do I peg the awning out? I always use rock pegs anyway, can I just knock these Ingo the gravel? What if it's tarmac?

Hi, I just use metal pegs in into the hard standing surface, on some hardstandings my awinging still reaches to adjacent grassed area to be pegged in places. Never yet come across tarmac or concrete hardstandings on a proper site. They do help to keep everything cleaner in wet weather and we always have hardstandings if available

If possible, and allowed, I would try and get the caravan on the hardstanding and the awning on grass. Put the car on the hardstanding next to the caravan. Some sites allow this but others don't. They want the car next to the awning.

I must admit I'm not a big fan of hardstanding either, but I can see the advantage if the weather's bad. I've only ever been on hardstanding once, and that was last September. It was only a short break so we didn't bother with the awning, and it was a small site that only had hardstanding for caravans, and grass for tents.

We have been on a few sites where the hardstanding is tarmac but these sites make it very clear on the website and when you book that awnings are not allowed on these pitches. We have also been on a concrete hardstanding where the caravan goes on the narrow hardstanding but the awning goes on the grass beside it. The majority of hardstanding pitches we have used are gravel on a hardcore base and a good heavy hammer will bash rock pegs into it with no problem.

I'm not a fan of hardstandings either because the gravel under foot is nowhere near as comfortable as grass and can damage the base of the awning skirt if windy as it flaps too and fro. I've only ever been on two hardstandings, one was gravel and the other, small fragmented chips of slate (in Wales) which when wet was awful for clinging to the sole of my shoes which then spread onto the caravan floor. However, although we didn't erect an awning at the one in Wales, we did on the gravel hardstanding and used Blue Diamond hard rock pegs which were fine but as a word of advice I would carry a heavy lump hammer to knock them in otherwise it could prove a difficult task with just a rubber mallet.

Regularly use hard standings and position caravan so it and awning are on it, but the front pegs just reach the grass at the edge, and easier to put in. It is only the pegs for sides that then need rock pegs hammering in. I use a 2 lb lump hammer for this.

One hard standing I used had the opposite problem, it was fairly new construction and not yet well compacted/consolidated, even HD long screw in pegs wouldn't hold tight, just kept pulling out with a slight wind! Even doubling up with 2 crossed over pegs barely held.

Think I prefer all grass pitches, tendency to walk too much grit/gravel into awning/van from hard standing in my limited experience.

Hard standing is great in inclement weather I think, but I much prefer grass in the awning.

We were at Troutbeck Head at Easter. Its a CAMC site and has hard standing to pretty much every plot I think. The wardens (although very friendly) don't like anything on the grass in between plots (fire break rules?). I have some screw in pegs (and associated drill bits!); they didn't go in. I had some rock pegs and managed to get them in with a lump hammer I carry in the front locker. All good, until we were taking the awning down - I struggled to get some of the pegs back out again and bent a number of them beyond reuse.

Been on a hard standing that was basically 10 inches deep gravel, needed very long pegs !

we also prefer grass, but if on a hard standing pitch I always put some old tarpaulins down first so I don't get any damage to the awning then put my better ground sheet over, I use drive in rock pegs.

We tend to avoid hardstanding if at all possible, and particularly if we intend putting up an awning. Ok for short out-of-season breaks with no awning, but not for our main holiday.

we have a KAMPA air awning and use there protector pads on gravel to protect the tubes

In regards to walking gravel into caravan on hard standing I've experienced several places where they cut the grass but don't pick it up so grass is constantly being walked in more on CL sites
