It's renewal time for our car insurance and it's just occurred to me - if we had an accident whilst towing and the car was damaged (and unable to be driven), how would we get the caravan recovered?
It's not covered under the car insurance and if the caravan wasn't damaged, not by the caravan insurance either, and presumably not by the breakdown insurance as the car has not actually broken down and would be recovered by the insurance company.

in those circumstances your caravan or anything else your car was towing is covered, and a suitable recovery vehicle would be sent to collect everything that is law!
The cars not broken down so breakdown cover wont apply.
If the cars undriveable then the company collecting your car should be able to tow the caravan. Where they take it will depend on your insurance.
It may goto the repairers or they may take it to your home/campsite.
The breakdown company may recover the caravan at your cost, you maybe able to recover that from the insurance though.
A couple of years back i was talking to another camper and he had issues after an accident with his caravan fairly close to the campsite.
Breakdown said its not broken down its an accident and for some reason his insurance couldn't recover it.
I cannot remember all the details but he was not happy.
Most car insurance policies will automatically recover the caravan but not all. They are only required to provide third party insurance for the towed non motorised vehicle not necessarily recovery of an undamaged caravan.

Well, I've been on the phone to the two insurance companies I'm considering for my car insurance before making my final decision.
Saga said they would not recover the caravan, just the car and LV said of course they would recover the caravan as well as the car.
Looks like I'm staying with LV for another year then!
I must admit it's not something I'd ever considered before.
Green Flag breakdown cover through CMC covers recovery of vehicle and associated caravan (dependant on level of cover)after an "insured Incident" which includes "immobilisation of insured vehicle as a result of breakdown, road accident, theft or attempted theft, malicious damage, accidental damage, fire, flat tyre, lack of fuel, loss or breakage of keys or as a result of being parked on soft ground.

We similarly are with Green Flag car caravan "breakdown insurance" to cover any conceivable situation and remove that sort of hassle at a time when we had hassle enough.
In the scale of our combined motoring and caravanning hobby annual cost the £120 odd extra we pay for both cars to be covered fades into pretty "small beer" territory.
If Green Flag want to chase my vehicle insurers to recover their costs then that's their choice, all we want is to know help is there when desperately in need of it. Been there twice, more hassle is definitly not needed.
Hi
I make a point saying i tow with my car insurance.
Even if the caravan is insured, and i have breakdown cove, i would expect the car insurance to cover it, if i was towing at the time.
Mayday is breakdown cover which is purchased in addition to a car insurance policy.
The OP wanted to know if the caravan would be recovered under the car insurance policy if the car was undriveable but the caravan was undamaged,as stated some may recover the van others may not.
