hi all,
we recently returned from a 5 week trip to spain with caravan, we had an ant infestation in van whilst we were there, if fact the whole site was blasted with insecticide whilst we were there ,as was the site next door. these were very small ants , about 3mm long, and were in the trees above. a giant pressure washer , mounted on a tanker , drove around the site and blasted up through the trees , but we've brought some home, just been away to Anglesey and during hot weather ,they've started to emerge out of the cracks again,
so,
has anyone "fumigated" a caravan if so with what, and how.
thanks

A species that is not native to a country but is then introduced resulting in bad stuff happening

Think Himalayan Balsam, grey squirrels or rabbits in Australia, etc. etc.

You, my friend could have introduced some really nasty foreign ants to the detriment of good ole British ants !!!

Hi,. You need to get a product called dethlac spray. Remove all upholstery and empty cupboards and spray it all around in bunks lockers and cupboards and crevices where you see them. It is a lacquer that dries and will kill ants when they contact sprayed area. Had to use it when we purchased our caravan when it had been stored unused for 2years in a farm barn, there was a fine brown dust everywhere that had come in through the vents had to change the carpet. After a thorough clean we discovered that along with the dust tiny mites had got in so sprayed dethlac around and this solved problem.you will need to ventilate while you spray and best wear a dust mask. It's should be available in your local hardware store.

With ants you can buy poison from the likes of b & q. Ants are attracted to it and take it back to the nest and feed it to all the rest. It works, Ive used it in a (house) kitchen where the ants were coming in under the cupboards.

Look up ‘ant stop bait station’

I know of a case, not a caravan but boat, where fumigating bombs were used and later a load of incredible expensive electronic kit was destroyed. An agent in them attacks copper and therefore slowly overtime it wrecked the printed circuit boards.

Best know exactly what you are doing.

Maxforce LN ant bait station is what you need. They contain the same active as used by professional pest controller and will not cause damage to the caravan. They work based on habits of ants feeding each other and the insecticide not killing the ant until it passed on to others deep inside the ants nest. Most other 'cures' simply kill the patrolling ants without the nest being wiped out.

Hi, I had no problems using dethlac, it just leaves a sheen on the surface all areas I did were out of sight i.e. bunks and cupboards for crevices spray crevice then wipe off excess. Don't spray cupboard where you keep packet food only crevice. Try bunk base let it dry and see what you think.

The product is called 'Nippon' which I have used previously in the back garden but not in a caravan. However, the poison should work exactly the same without any damage to the furniture or carpets etc. There will be a new nest formed somwhere undectable where the ants are retreating to so the 'Nippon' will not only destroy the ants but the nest as well.
It worked for me after being advised by a neighbour who also got rid of a ant infestation by the same method.
If you Google 'Nippon Ant Killer' you can read more about the product.

thanks everyone, I eventually went for the smoke bombs first, lit them this afternoon, and will leave them overnight, (after completely emptying van), then I have bought 2 nippon bait stations to put down , I will see how that goes.

Oh my God. Can you still get DETHLAC? We used that product back in the 80s to kill off an ant invasion that took over an outside wall of our house. Never had another ant after that in the 12 years we lived there. Marvelous stuff.
