We've gone from tents to a trailer tent, which we find takes us ages to set up. Plus another wet pack-up meant taking it home and then putting it back up dry it off before packing it up again. It was 5pm before everything was sorted, and what was a great weekend away was kind of spoiled. Again.

We've long thought about caravans, but could not have afforded one previously that we wanted. But we know one that we could keep for a while and retain some value would be a big financial commitment, not least because I would have to start by shelling out for my B&E license. However we think the benefits over the TT are pretty evident. But it's a case of now or never, really, with the kids growing up.

My parents have tried to put me off, as one of their friends had one in their drive, and was a reminder of how little they used it. But its got us thinking how much we would use it, and whether the outlay would be justified. We'd have a 2-3 week holiday in summer, and the rest would be weekends away.

So my question is: How often do you use yours for touring/weekends?

You might not need a B+E licence. It depends on your car, unless you are using a Range Rover size vehicle you'll probably find there are quite a few caravans you could tow and still be under the 3500kg limit. If you don't need the extra licence you'll have an extra £500 to spend on the caravan.

We bought our first caravan in 2009 and have just got back from our 99th trip. Some of these trips have been on 5 or more sites in one trip so countless amounts of sites.
We go to France twice a year for a max of 13 weeks. That counts as 2 trips.
We get out in it whenever we get spare days and do CL sites in peak weeks paying a max of £15 a night.
Like you, we did camping and got soaked too many times.
Never looked back since we got our caravan. The best times of our lives have been with our van and our bikes.

We changed from TT to caravan when our 3 children were 10, 7 and 4 so that we could use it for holidays and weekends all year round rather than just in the warmer months. We used the caravan much more often than the TT. That was over 20 years ago and we’ve never looked back!

We use the 'van more than we used to use the tent.

But in terms of financial sence, that depends on how much you spend on and use the 'van.

As for ease, if the van is stored at home it is easier than packing the car with tent equipment and the setting up of the van alone takes no time. But there's still time and effort in putting up the awning, even an air porch awning can take more than half an hour to put up and peg out.

Also, you'll still need to clean the van bodywork and roof regularly and awnings get wet too

I guess it's a case of "you pay's yer money...."

We're the other end of the scale. I work abroad so only use the caravan 3 or 4 times a year but still would not be without it!

We also moved from a tent, tent and gear in a trailer, trailer tent and folding camper before taking the plunge 10 years ago and buying our caravan. Best move we ever made, as you get older you want a few more home comforts like a good bed, warmth, hot water on tap and, not least in the middle of the night a toilet inside. The other thing is that in a caravan your season is much longer, it's no big deal if it's frosty outside of raining all day because you are warm and comfy inside. You don't need to spend a fortune but take the time and trouble to make sure it isn't suffering from damp. As for the extra size towing, you soon get used to that.

Dave.

we went from tent to trailer tent, back to tent (when the kids lost interest) to caravan and we love it.

we have it stored on a site near Leeds Castle and use it every other weekend.

we've just booked out first trip away in it for September and are hoping to see more of the uk over the next few years.

we wouldn't be without it

Hi all great posts and i second moost of them, having a caravan is great, we have had ours from new for over 10 yrs now and have never really looked back, however ther issue as always is getting away in it. Weekend break friday-sunday is ideal if you go a short distance with not much seeting up, however we have always found having two kids and aweekend break is difficult, due to constraints of work, schools availability etc, and have stuck more to longer weekends and bank holidays. Our typical break, is Feb half term (long Weekend) Easter longish weekend, Whit week. two weeks beginning school summer holidays then a long ish weekend over august B/H, and then hopefully the final half term in October.
In each case always putting up the awning (inflatable), but its still a few hours afer arrival we are sorted. Its okay for couples etc with limited kit, that just turn up and un hitch etc all done, but for a family its more difficult, and we have a relatively large caravan.

Go for it you may not look back we have not, dont forget though insurance for caravan, breakdown insurance for caravan, storage fees, maintenace, service, all costs needed before a trip waway.

With regards B & E licence please check carefully, as there are alot of mis conceptions about this and weights etc, and also bear in mind the weight of caravan to car ratio as 85% as guideline (NOT a RULE), for a stable outfit, in theory. Theres plenty on here about this do a quick search.

enjoy.

Usage is a good question, but if you think about it in purely financial terms it doesn't necessarily make a lot of sense if you cant get away. Its really a 'lifesyle' purchase. You do it because you want to, like buying a posher car than you strictly need.

IMHO it is preferable to keep a van in storage rather than at home, unless this can be done inconspicuously. Vans can be an eyesore stuck in a small front garden, and neighbours may not be too enamoured either, so it depends on your situation. It also advertises to the local scrotes that the house is empty when you are away, plus a higher risk of theft.

For weekends, remember that sites, like hotels, want you to vacate your pitch by say 11.00 or 12.00am on Sunday, unless you pay for another night. If working full time, you might find the packing /unpacking, collecting and returning the van to storage, then leaving early a bit much for such a short break - but then others will undoubtedly have different views...

Caravans really come into their own when you are retired.

In the last 8 years we have spent nearly 1000 nights touring. In the off period it is in the garage at home, so no storage fees. We really are getting our money's worth.

The benefits are:
1) cheaper living and food
2) non use of domestic utilities
3) better weather
4) cheaper alcohol
5) non availability as unpaid babysitter/carer
6) avoid children, grand and great/grand children's           birthdays.

This is something to look forward to if you are still working.

Hi Katycymru
I can only give you our personnel experience.
To be blunt, i never wanted a caravan. most of the wife's family had caravans but i was set against it, always been more of a tent man.
So we had a tent to begin with. then had kids so got a bigger tent. just meant more packing and sorting.
We then upgraded to a trailer tent. Easier with the kids with proper beds etc. Loved it.
We then saw a folding camper and fell in love. all the upgraded amenities but still canvas above. we absolutely loved our pathfinder. Got it down to about 45mins from arriving to all set up on my own.
Was perfect till the wife's parents joined up with us while we were away. We watched them set up and with in 10 mins they were in having a cuppa (no awning mind!). To tell the truth i was blown away. That was the point
we started to look for one. Truthfully, we have not looked back. We keep ours on the drive most the year but it is so nice to be able to get back from work on a friday and go away if you want. Find a site and just go. everything is in there packed up ready. grab a bit of food and you are away.
Best decision we made. Im 34 now and intend to have a caravan till way after retirement.

I did my B+E test as i passed after 1997. If you look around there are more suitably priced ones out there, i found mine through C&MH club. plus you can still go abroad etc with it on the back.

Not everyone wants or likes caravans, i didnt, but i am more than won over.

I have towed some big outfits in my time, But now i have a renault clio estate and I tow a trigano silver 4 berth, it is less than a ton and is a pop top so looks less intrusive when stored and so light and easy to tow, its ready to go away in a couple of hours notice. i keep clothes and towels in it, just need some food, put fridge on which runs off car whilst towing and you good to go.
The secret to using a caravan is, having it ready to go.
If you totally unpack it, it takes ages to get ready. I always leave some clothes in, and why not, so its always ready.
