Hi I'm looking at purchasing a newer caravan
Want the layout fixed bed with end bathroom.
Which leads to either senator California, unicorn Valencia or the Pegasus model all about the same price but which is best ie quality value for money?
Ours has a fixed bed, end bathroom and it certainly ain't no Bailey.
------------- XVI yes?

You ask for fixed bed, end bathroom and then you say this leads to Senator California, Unicorn Valencia and Pegasus.
These are not the only caravans that have that layout. Get it.
Or what are you talking about?

In your first post you said that the layout you wanted was limited to a Bailey only which the selection is either the Senator California, Unicorn Valencia or the Pegasus models. What blueexpo97 is saying that with the specific layout you are looking for you are not just limited to just the Bailey models as there are other caravan manufacturers that do exactly the same layout. Besides, you call it an end bathroom but I'm yet to see a caravan with a bath installed. All the ones I have seen all have a shower.
The layout with an end washroom and fixed bed on the nearside is also produced by other manufacturers such as Swift, Adria and Buccaneer so you are not limited to the Bailey models you have mentioned.
The Senator was superceded by the Pegasus which uses the Alu Tec construction method, the Unicorn range has the same construction method but has a higher specification.
Alu tec has no timber in the body, other than the floor which is a marine ply composite. The body shells are very strong.
Senator has 7'4" wide body Pegasus the same I think. Unicorn is 7'6".
A Pegasus or Unicorn will cost more then a Senator as they are newer, Unicorns and Pegasus are popular so plenty about.
The Alu tec range have a 6 year anti damp ingress warranty which is tranferable if servicing has been properly carried out.
------------- DS-There's more to life than football!!!
Had a Senator California series 6 which was a super caravan.
Changed it for a Valencia 2011 series 1 which has turned out to a fantastic caravan. Had it serviced every year since with no issues. I have thought long and hard about swapping for a newer model but cant see the need to do so. Alde heating system is out of this world.
Wouldn't swap it for anything else still as good as new even at almost 8 years old.
------------- Don't take LIFE too seriously nobody gets out ALIVE anyway
I've seen a Bailey unicorn Valencia 2011 for a really good price £8400 and going to have a look this weekend. Looking at the weight it is quite a heavy van at 1400kg does this show when towing as I think that's 150kg heavier then the senator.
Thanks for your feedback so you would recommend the Valencia over the California or as good as each other. I've also looked at newer like yourself and it doesn't justify all the extra money I would be very happy with either of these 2 vans
Thanks
You need to be looking at the gross laden weights of caravans not the unladen weights, the Valencia has a plated gross weight of 1565kg(MTPLM), the weight you quoted above of 1400kg is the unladen weight(MIRO). I don't know what you will be towing with but you will need a B+E licence if you don't already have one, and £8400 sounds very cheap.
Yeah still heavier then the senator whatever way you look at it.
As long as the combined towing train weight is less then 3500 kg or less then I'm fine which it will be.
Yes it is cheap seems to good to be true looking at it the weekend to make sure everything checks out
It sounds like you are on a restricted licence limiting you to a gross train weight of 3500kg. For licencing purposes it is the max plated weight of the car and caravan that are used. Have a look at the DVLA website for clarification on the weights.
If your caravan has an MTPLM of 1565kg your tow car will have to have a max plated weight of 1935kg to keep under the 3500kg limit. A car with a gross weight of 1935kg will have a kerbweight of around 1400 kg and therefore will be lighter than the caravan. The caravan should always be lighter than the car that is towing it and the recommendation for novices is that the caravan MTPLM should be less than 85% of the car kerbweight, experienced towers can tow heavier caravans but the kerbweight must not be exceeded.
It might help if you could give us the weights of your tow car so that we could see what you could realistically tow safely and legally.
