Having decided to change our caravan, we've had a day looking around one or two dealers plots.
It amazes me why they would display for sale a unit that has clearly not been touched since they took it in.

You could offer me the best caravan in the world, for a very good price. But if it was grunged up in the corners with crumbs and god knows what else, had obvious sticky fingermarks in places would-be buyers had no reason to touch, and a shower cubicle that i would only use wearing a wet-suit; i would not take it off your hands at any price.

There was one particular van we had seen online, and was very keen to do a deal, once viewed, as it was 99% 'what we wanted'. It was the dirtiest unit we stepped in all day!

Which then has you thinking; what sort of a dirty so-and-so has last owned this van?

We didn't find one that was worth trading in for, unfortunately.

I wonder why caravans may not have been cleaned over the last 6 months?

I agree, we had a look at a 2019 used van the other day. Well, for saying we have been shut up since March, the van couldn't you would have thought been used all that much. Every kitchen drawer was full of grime and crumbs.

It makes me wonder what everything else is like if they cannot look after a bit of simple cleaning....put me right off aswell.

I know some folk can see through the mess but if it doesn't look 'loved' I'm not interested.

you wouldnt buy a car for that sort of money in that state! ive said the same thing before and even known of people to part ex a van and the toilet cassette be full!

or more to the point if you booked a holiday to say spain and arrived at your hotel and found the mess of the same level a lot of caravans are in, you would be demanding your money back and the next flight home

Most dealers don't clean the vans till they are sold as the world and his wife will probably walk through them often with kids with mucky fingers. People touch and poke about in vans so they are cleaned when sold.

I take pride in my caravan. Every time we pack it up I give it a clean as I want it to be nice and clean when we go up again. I'm always wiping things down each day as we use them.
I'm clean and tidy at home and I treat my caravan like my second home.
I wouldn't say i'm obsessive but who wants to live in muck??!!

people sit in cars, the kids jump in, people poke and prod buttons and touch most things, but they get polished to high heaven! its one reason why i prefer to buy from a private sale, at least the owners will clean it as they arent faceless then

What I can't understand, is a large "SOLD" sign in the window, and yet they are still on the forecourt, still unlocked, and still have folk going on board to have a nosy. I've noticed this on caravans and motorhomes.
I'm pretty sure if I'd just agreed to buy, and presumably put down a deposit, the first thing I'd be demanding is that it is taken off the forecourt and/or locked to the public.

When I was looking to buy a s/h caravan, I became quite disillusioned, considering I was looking at vans only 2 or 3 years old and only through franchised dealerships, some were truly squalid and I question whether a mere clean up would have revived some, more likely many parts would need replacing. The squalid state didn't seem to affect the price though! - they were priced on model/year rather than condition! I was also quite alarmed at how many had never been serviced and therefore had permanently invalidated any manufacturers warrantee. People had made a significant financial investment in these vans but taken no care of them whatsoever!

When I found the van I did purchase, it superficially looked remarkably clean, but my after purchase 'refresh' showed a lot of hidden muck and abusive/negligent use in the 18 months it had been in use by it's original owners, who must have been real slobs!

I suspected the upholstery, or at least the removable cushions must have been professionally cleaned as it was spotless and smelt of recent detergent. The carpets were another matter though! Covered in 'cling film' protective layer by the dealer, but on removing it many different spillage stains were evident. General investigation behind cushions and under table/work tops also revealed a plethora of spills that had run into nooks and crannies without being cleaned up at the time. The fridge didn't look too bad until you removed the shelves to reveal stalactites of sticky spillages that hung under the bars, and black mould that grew in the shelf runners, with your head in it whilst cleaning it out, it actually smelt pretty rank too!

Thankfully despite having a fully fitted shower & toilet type bathroom, they must have been the kind of people who never used onboard facilities as they were virtually unused looking. Likewise with the cooker, don't think they self catered very much as that also looked unused.

Now I've had the van longer than the original from new owners, yet I've managed not to turn it into pigsty, even with a Border Collie dog having free reign in it, so what kind of utter slobs actually owned this van, and seemingly likewise the majority of nearly new vans! The vans I looked at were nearly all trade-ins for new vans, so what do these people do with them, use them for a year or so, virtually trash them, then buy a new one to repeat the process!

The dealership I have found out since purchasing my van, has a bit of a reputation for not putting themselves out to do anything they are not forced to do. They fixed a number of relatively trivial things that I pointed out on my pre and post purchase inspection without quibble, but equally you might have expected them to have fixed these things automatically prior to trying to sell the van, but left to their own devices they would have happily sold the van on with these faults.

The caravan industry seems to be even dodgier than the second hand car trade!

In society you get two kinds of people, those who like to respect things and keep everything chemically clean and tidy and those who have no respect or any interest in hygiene whatsoever. The caravan dealers won't do anything where it costs THEM money which includes cleaning merely because time is money. They wait for a potential buyer and hope that it's someone who's not too particular and will buy sold as seen which is a big saving for the dealer to say the least. Then you get the ones who are VERY particular and prefer to walk away especially if it smells fusty which they quite often do. That's when the dealer makes promises to the customer regarding cleaning out the caravan before collection and the biggest excuse of all is...."It's only just arrived and not had time to do any cleaning in it yet". Yes, they will clean the caravan but only what the human eye can see so it at least looks respectable but we had one caravan where we found a child's teddy bear under the seat, clumps of congealed mud where boots were kept and cobwebs inside the ceiling lights and the list goes on regarding all the other nooks and crannies etc. The caravan we have now was 12 years old when we purchased it from a dealer and have to admit it looked virtually brand new inside and a lot more impressive than some of the other caravans we had viewed that were less than 5 years old so the previous owners must have been those sort of people who at least had some respect. However, when it came to giving it a good clean before our first trip out, I did find a little congealed grease around the perimeter of the gas hob but with aid of some liquid grease cleaner, a drop of washing up liquid and an old toothbrush it was finally chemically clean to just how WE like it.
That's one of the the main reasons why we wanted our own touring caravan because we had seen the filth left behind by previous guests in static caravans, chalets, guest houses and hotels alike but now we are always the previous guests in our own unit so it's always chemically clean and respectable.

Most dealers would possibly lift any obvious dirt before putting a For Sale ticket on it.
What will cost them money is cleaning it twice, so more or less leave as is until all the foot traffic has been through it, then when sold give it the full works.

Most people will be able to see through the dust.

Dust isnt 'dirt' as such. Its everywhere all day long till its wiped. Filth, however, is another matter.

To the ones proclaiming they would accept a dealer saying they would clean a van prior to collection. Are they honestly saying should they try sell a van - or car, themselves privately, that they would leave it a tip, and promise the would-be purchaser they would clean it if they wanted to buy it? I think not. It would be spotless for viewings.
Anyway, idle dealers are losing money hand over fist by leaving vans grubby.

Have these dealers ever heard of "kerb appeal"
You rock up to view a caravan at an exorbitant price and it looks like it has gone to rack and ruin.
Yep people are going to beat a path to your door.
