How/where do dealers get hold of them? We have seen a 2019 van that we like; they also have a few 2020 vans. Can't believe that they are all pre owned.

It may just be my incorrect perception but I have always wondered if some very nearly new vans have had serious issues, been rejected and then been put on sale by the dealer either with or without the issues being fixed. Last year we were talking to the guy who stores his caravan beside ours on our storage site. We were at the site when he proudly arrived with his brand new caravan straight from the dealer so we did all the usual ohhhs and ahhhs as he showed it to us. About a month later we noticed that the caravan was gone from storage so we just assumed they were away in it but then about a further 4 weeks later, we went to the site one day and there was a completely different caravan there. We wondered if they had left the storage and the space had been given to someone else but a few weeks later we bumped into him and he told us that there had been so many faults with the original van that he had rejected it. The dealer had not been helpful so he went to a different one and got a different new van. However, he was appalled that the original dealer was selling his rejected van without (he believed) having done anything to it.

This may just be a one off and maybe there are genuine reason why people would trade in a nearly new van, maybe they bought a particular layout and then didn’t like it, or maybe they have lost their job and just need the money or maybe with Covid, some people have thought that having an expensive caravan gathering dust in storage for months on end because they can’t use it isn’t worth it and have sold up.

You never know but it makes me suspicious!

Thanks, this dealer doesn't sell brand new vans, seems a bit strange that they have several 2020/2019 vans. Trying to find out if they are pre owned, if not, they must have acquired them, but from where?

It’s more likely to be a marketing strategy, so that folk who are ordering new from the factory don’t feel that they are being ripped of due to the lower price of unused inventory stock being sold a lot cheaper, so it gets classed as used, the same kind of thing goes on in the car industry but in a much bigger way.

My firm used to provide me with a BMW 1 series along with 200 other staff, brand new from the factory, I would keep it for three months 7000 miles, then it would end up at one of the cheap motor outlets like MotorPoint at a price of around £10k below new list price.

I am no longer with that firm as they went bust back in February this year, and I was then TUPED over to another firm, and have been on company provided hire cars since then, until I find out what the new firms company car policy is.

i guess the only real way you would find out would be if you did a credit/insurance check? cris? as that would name the previous owner, only thing is that its going to cost you to find out, unless you can convince him you need to see it before parting with any money

I'm sure some of them were demonstrators from last year now recycled, with at least most of the bits replaced that some dodgy folk seem to delight in nicking whilst they view.

Oo, we do like a Coachman! We got our first, a 2 berth VIP (420), in 2017 and changed it this year (finally collected it in August) for a VIP 520 (3 berth) - not a fixed bed but a side dinette so more room. We were so taken with the Coachman that we also swapped our "France caravan" for one too!

I have no evidence, but I would suspect that the 2019/2020 preowned models are just unsold stock (probably "owned" by a previous dealer) from this year, now the 2021 models are out. Could also have been ordered before the lockdown but then not collected?

Our big issue was the fridge, this mainly won't effect you as you don't go abroad.

The fridge does not cool down properly in high temperatures, even with external fridge vent covers removed. Of course you might be lucky and get some really hot days in this country, we first noticed it in Kent prior to going to France.

You cannot have the caravan door open to allow a through breeze for cooling purposes.

I wrote to Coachman and had a number of very snidey replies which basically boiled down to we have your £26k and don't really care what issues you have. Terrible customer service.

At this time with many people being laid off or are furloned the first thing to sell woudl be the caravan.
By the same token in 2017 we rejected a caravan and it was collected from the storage area and the next day it was up for sale at a different dealer not far from Northampton. The tracker was still active so I was able to trace it. The difference in price was bascially the VAT.
Incidentally the caravan required a minimum of about £4000 of work to put it in a decent condition as it had a cracked front panel, cracked front skylight etc. and was due its first service!
