Hi folks,

Bought a caravan couple of months ago from a chap on ebay. Caravan was in storage at pe67sa and he was claiming it's a private sale etc. No warranty no returns. Caravan of course not as described with damp. No refund or return. After some ebay investigation 'I've found out that he is actually selling caravans under over 30 different nicknames to avoid tax or accept returns. He either drives 17 plate Seat Alhambra or 06 saab estate. His name is Janusz W and he has a mate that helps him too. Nicknames they operate under - agso_14, agsok, alde-7899, aldud_0, anno.2012, anslo64, anya250314, dud-nicol, j.w.boss, jan.boss, jano1337, john.dad, jul_1135, kietjone-0, kowa-alek, mamatul_0, marian10261, mds1413, nikinati1, oscar-garden, paulm8266, trifin_28, premsamie, urabu62, wiode_0.

I've informed HMRC and trading standards, but I think all should be aware of this practice to avoid hassle.

Cheers

Bobster

The moral of this is; if you do want some redress (for faults), dont buy off 'a bloke on ebay' unless you are 100% sure that whats for sale is what you are happy with going forward.

A timely warning I think. There are probably many such businesses operating illegally, and it's as well to be aware of them. Take care folks!

I agree with Fiona, action fraud may well be interested too.

Maybe this should be pointed out to Ebay, given they are providing the platform for dodgy dealings. They are meant to be big on fraud-prevention.

Did you not even bother to get it inspected before you bought it ?
To be honest, having looked at that storage area on Google maps I would have not entertained it, looks more like a scrap yard.
How did you pay ?

So are HMRC, but they still allow all the big companies to get away with tax aoidance in this country. Good to know that HMRC are chasing down these horrid people that owe £500 and threatenining them with Jail, whilst Amazon, Apple, and the rest get away with dodgy tax haven headquarters !!

Issue with eBay is that while you can get through to a real person on the phone that person is on the other side of the world so won’t know anything about caravan sales in the UK. My view is that you should treat eBay just like an advert in your local shop. You check the goods first & if you are not happy then don’t pay any money & walk away.

That is precisely what I do Billy, unless the item is small and new. I've bought loads of stuff off ebay over several years, but mainly things like shelf brackets, boxes of screws, tubes of sealant, and such like. Anything bigger and/or second hand I wouldn't even consider until I had been all over it with a fine-toothed-comb! £30 would be about my limit for buying anything off there unseen.

Yes Colin. I use eBay a fair bit but mostly for low value items from eBay shops. I have bought 2 caravans & also sold them both on eBay after a few years use with no issues though. One caravan cost a grand & the other about £400. I do have a bit of knowledge though. I thoroughly checked them inside & out & I checked tyre pressures & wheel nuts before I towed them away. When I sold them I ensured they were roadworthy & fit to tow away.

eBay is not all bad. Plenty of caravan main dealers advertise new & used caravans on there. There are plenty of genuine private sales of caravans that the sellers have owned & used for years but of course even they need thoroughly checking before paying.

The possible dodgy dealers are easy enough to spot. Particularly if you contact seller you can soon suss that they are amateur dealers & avoid.

You and I seem to be on the same wavelength Billy. I bought one caravan off ebay for £500, but not before I had thoroughly examined it. We had it for 4 years, had some good holidays with it, and sold it on ebay for more than I bought it for. Bought the one we have now from a dealer as a "trade sale". Cost us £1,100. We have now had that one nearly 4 years and plan on using it again next year. I don't think it owes us anything.

If he is still selling on eBay can you get a friend to offer on one that he is selling. Arrange to meet then once he is there get your money back. I would think a few of your friends could assist in getting him to agree to return your money.

We camped for years. In 2019 we bought an Elddis Avante 454. We like it as it is short (6.9m) and fits in our driveway and has a fixed bed.
We had 127 nights away in the caravan in 2023.

I have to ask, Colin. Aside from it needing to be safe underneath to tow away. What quality of caravan can you expect for £500? As to me the underside (to be roadworthy) alone has to be £250 worth of that.
