Is food grade hose really needed on these or can you use standard hose without affecting the taste of the water?

We use brewery grade plastic pipe to fill with.
The blue "food grade" pipe that came with the kit seemed to leave a tangy taste to the water which is absent with the brewery pipe.

The above post is familiar to a caravanning friend who found the same results.

We use a coil hose as it is lighter, longer and easier to manage. However we do not drink the water from /through the aquaroll as we always carry bottled water or go straight to the taps provided on site. For all other uses it is perfect ie washing up and showering etc. Also by taking the supplied hose trigger it's handy for hosing things down............

Same here , we always use bottled water for drinking , often there’s a taste anything fro the chlorinated taste to plastic .
It’s so rare to not find a site that the water doesn’t have a ‘tang’ at some point of the day .
We use water from the site for everything else including cooking and washing etc .

The difference is that food grade hose is smooth on the inside so as not to 'trap' bacteria inside.

Non food grade hose is not and is not suitable for food use.

There is a bigger issue of concern, what else is leached from the plastic into the water than the specific issues of taste.
Plastics, are prone to leach chemicals such as plasticisers.
In this application water is for long periods static in the hose, and the hose warms up in sunlight, so the held water absorbs or carries any chemicals leached from the hose, only in one direction, to the van.

I absolutely would not entertain using anything other than a food quality hose, in this application.
The growth of biological substances will occur food grade or not, to a significant extent these will vary with the wavelength of any light penetrating the hose and temperature. The latter being near ideally provided by the sun warming the water trapped in the hose. Most biological growths are thankfully harmless, just visually unpleasant and some can affect taste.

We once stayed on a site that was a dairy farm. All the pipes serving any drinking water taps were dairy grade offcuts - smooth clear plastic. I don’t know if that’s the same as brewery grade.

Be mindful that in our application discussed here "clear" plastic tubing of whatever quality will be quite unsuitable.
Being clear it filters out very little of the wavelengths of the sun's light, so biological development inside the tubing will abound; the more so as for most of the time the water is both stagnant and the sun's warmth heats it up

Got to emphatically agree with JTQU's posts. Ordinary hose cannot be regarded as safe for potable water supplies. Many of the plasticisers (the chemicals that make plastics flexible) readily leach out of many plastics into adjacent materials in contact with them, including water contained within! Those plasticisers will potentially do more than just give a taint to the taste of the water, some have proven to have carcinogenic properties and other impacts on health.

Many will say I've used ordinary garden hose or whatever without ill effects, BUT many years down the line when a medical condition is more likely to arise from the consequences, will you be able to identify the source of the problem?

Food grade hose has accountability from start of manufacture onwards to meet standards of safety, lesser grades do not.

For the minimal extra cost in using the proper food grade hose, it's just not worth risking your health for.

As long as the food grade hose complies EU 10/2011 regulation on the type of plastic that can come in contact with food, the colour is irrelevant, the regulation is based on clear tubing.
UV rays from sunlight can have an adverse effect on bacteriological growth rather than encourage it.

Well we've been caravanning and narrow boating for nearly 50 years and have used ordinary hoses for all that time; have drunk water out of plastic Aquarols, plastic containers, plastic tanks in boats and have NEVER had a problem and have NO health problems.

Firstly, many of those containers will likely be food grade plastics, Aquarols etc. certainly are! Most of the items you mention are also different types of plastic to hoses (usually Polythenes rather than PVC) and don't contain large amounts of plasticisers anyway.

Secondly, something like smoking doesn't kill or seriously impact every users health to a noticeable degree, but it still doesn't make it a wise thing to do, some absolutely do suffer!

I just don't see the need to add to the toxic chemical burden we already impose on our bodies by modern life, for the sake of the absolutely minimal additional cost of using the right materials for the job! Just my view, everyone to their own and all that.

People are fastidious about the bit of pipe that feeds the aquaroll, but how many have looked under those blue sleeves on the pump/filter to the van? More often than not the clear pipe inside, doing the work, will be tinged green or black. And thats bacteria, not its colour. Also, your pipework can be lab-clean, but if the water you are putting through it is not, it defeats the object. It all depends whats on the other end of the site tap - especially overseas; a borehole, mains, well, etc. etc. Just saying.

In this application discussed here, colour is particularly relevant for the reason already stated.

UV rays are a steriliser, but there are loads of other colour wave length rays in sunlight, some help humans see, plant photosynthesis, and some warm us and our water hose up.

A clear food grade or otherwise hose left laying across a site with stagnant water, is a breeding ground made in heaven, for some biological activity.
