If in any doubt about gas, get your appliances checked by a qualified gas engineer, but they should be fine. Make sure you have a working carbon monoxide detector.

Regarding the battery, there are many factors involved.
How big the battery is.
How new the battery is.
What you intend to run off it.
How long you intend to stay on site.

As long as you don't expect too much of it a good battery should be fine for a few days but probably not much longer. Try running too much off it and it might only last 24 hours.

Definitely avoid running anything off the battery that contains any kind of heating element.

We tried off grid caravanning for the first time a few years ago when we went to a music festival. I was worried that we wouldn’t be able to cope for the 3 days of the festival but everything was great. We ran the fridge and water heater and stove from the gas. It took a few goes to get the gas to light so if you have not used the fridge on gas before, have a try to get it running to make sure it works okay. We had to reset the fridge 3 or 4 times before it lit but it did work eventually. As we were at a festival we weren’t really in the caravan much during the day but we had the heat on for a short time in the evening as the van was chilly when we got back to go to bed. However, we didn’t sleep with the heat on gas as even though the van is regularly serviced, I just didn’t feel comfortable sleeping with the gas on. We used the battery for a bit of light when we got back to the van at night and to run the pump for the shower for both of us each day. We also charged up both our phones each evening from the battery and as we have a solar panel, the battery stayed well topped up. I was amazed that the battery was showing just as full when we left to go home as it was when we arrived, the solar panel worked really effectively (but it was a very sunny weekend).

We have now done the same festival 3 times and feel really confident off grid for the 3 days. The last time we went was a dull, rainy weekend and even then, the solar panel meant we had plenty of power for the few things we needed but the levels were down a bit by the end of the 3 days. Based on these experiences, I would say that I would be happy to go off grid for up to 5 nights in the spring (the festival we go to is in May) and probably even longer during a sunny summer. If you don’t have a solar panel, I would recommend getting one as it kept the battery topped up really well.

I don’t think I would feel as confident in the winter though as we did burn through quite a lot of gas and if you run the heat on gas for a prolonged period, it will use a lot.

Try it for a weekend and see how you get on, then, if things work well for you, you can go for longer the next time!

We stay off grid for 6+ weeks in Benidorm with our 150w panel. A bright white cloudy sky also gives plenty of power and even thick cloud we get an amp or two 💪👍

large solar panel and large battery will always be better than no solar panel and large battery

i have just purchased a 235w monopoly domestic panel to fit on our motorhome - pre used but fully tested and working and delivering its intended output.

my suggestion, get the biggest solar panel than will fit on your van roof as your first option and look at increasing your battery size if that doesnt supply enough - remember that are plenty of stand alone 'power' solutions, poweroak, jackory to name two

We went a week in a 1991 van with 12v black and white portable telly for a couple of hours a day. Was fine.

Modern vans are a lot worse than old ones for this. They fill them with kit which needs 12v power whilst old ones used gas for fridge, heating, hot water with no 12v needed.

Now fridge, blown air heating, hot water, radio, alarm, TV aerial amplifier all need power and need it continuously. Power used for an hour or 2 uses a lot less than 24 hours a day.

Add in all your hi-tech laptops etc....

We did leave the fridge on gas overnight. The fridge doesn’t use much gas. The main use of gas is from the heating and water heater. I can’t really say how much gas we used for the 3 days off grid as I don’t know how much we had in the bottle before we went!

Off grid is our preference. 100 watt suitcase style solar panel and 10kg Safefill and we're very comfortable for several weeks away.

Both of our first two caravans had gas lighting, although I did install my own 12 volt system in them both. I could only charge it from the car though as very few sites had EHU in the 1970s or early 1980s, and those that did were very expensive.

Yep, gas lighting, gas heater and a hand or foot operated water pump for the cold water only at the sink meant there was no need at all for any 12 volt.

Bucket with lid for toilet in toilet tent.

Does progress always make things better. Certainly not proper camping is it.
