Given that we are now paying 34p for an electric kWh does anyone know if bottled gas gives cheaper heating costs than the metered site mains supply?

That depends on how much you pay for gas.
1kg of propane contains roughly 14kWh of energy, but a caravan heater is perhaps 60-80% efficient as compared to 100% for electric. Is you assume 80% efficient, then 1kg of gas yields 11kWh of heat.
11kWh of heat costs £3.84 on electric (at 34p per kWh).

So - if a 5kg refill (Flogas lite) costs less than £19.20 then use gas.
for 6kg calor - the price to beat is £23.04

Based on that - I seriously doubt gas is cheaper...

Apart from the actual cost, I consider electric heating to be safer as there is no risk of nasty fumes.

According to my calculations (which may be flawed?) and based on trdees resonable sounding ffigures above.

If a 13kg propane bottle costs £46.50. (online price from DPS Gas)
And if there are equivalent 11kWh per kg of gas,
Then there are 143 kWh per bottle?

That makes each gas kWh cost 33p so on the face of it there isnt much in it.

This does assume 80% thermal efficency but we know that heat does indeed vent out with the exhaust gases. It may be more efficiant or less?

Based on that I would carry on using the electric painfully expensive as it is and we wouldn't have to worry about the small increased safety risk with gas or fumes or driving to find a bottle supplier.

Thanks for the excellent points!!

When I'm on a site that charges for an "electric pitch" I always use electric heating rather than gas if I need any heating. I'm paying for far more than I will use so why not?

Thats a good point for touring pitches where the electric usage is included in the nightly price. We have started using seasonal pitches and they tend to have a meter on each pitch and you pay for what you use over the season.

That is quite a different matter I must admit. I just wish more touring sites had metered electricity. I would think gas is better in your instance providing you use a big enough cylinder. The smaller cylinders are comparatively much more expensive.

Yes - with such a big bottle and at such a good price, it will be a close thing.

Hi
If on electric I use it even on metered pitch, if I use it I pay for it.
Gas is great but with a alde heating system you will use 6kg bottle over a cold weekend easy at £24
In winter I carry a 13kg & 6kg in my locker just for that reason especially if rallying in cold weather.
As you only get 2 x 2hrs to top battery up with generator, which on a modern van with solar panels in winter time is inadequate. But that’s another discussion lol.

Next week on a metered pitch I will get £5 a night in electric allocated to me so that’s £15 towards my electric.
Be interested to see how long that £15 will last with current price levels before I have to top up , I will feed that back next week.

Thanks

Cheers
Ray

Hi Ray
Its sort of stacking up to suggest there isnt a huge cost difference between gas and electric heating. I was speaking to a site neighbour last weekend and he said that in the very cold spell we recently had he was 'spending' £25 in electrical units over 24 hours. I later went to my phone calculator and worked out that he was using 2.9 kWs per hour so he must have been using a fan heater or Halogen heater to supplement his 2kW van heating system.

When you factor in time (and car fuel?) to buy bottles and the mucking about changing bottles, its probably better to suck it up and pay the electric cost.

Gas bottles are like light bulbs in that they only fail when you want to use them! Its more than once I have been out in the cold and dark changing the bottle over

You are quoting the domestic rate. A metered commercial site will probably be more than double for 1kwh of electric and closer to £1 per kwh. If using a refillable Safefill bottle gas may be the cheaper option?

You may need more ventilation with gas to avoid condensation.

Why do you think that condensation will be any different if using gas instead of EHU in a caravan?

Fumes from the gas burning should be dispersed to the outside. Heat level is regulated by the occupier and it is heat meeting cool surfaces that causes condensation.

My electricity charges are £0.64 per kWh before the government discount which may or may not be continued.

Where does £0.34 per kWh come form?

That throws the whole calculation out.

Isn't the cost of a kwh capped at about £0.34. Anyone read that Centrica owner of BGAS have posted their biggest profits ever.
