My wife and i have been camping for years and have decided that now is the time to upgrade the family tent and get our first caravan. Obviously we are not going to be buying brand new straight away so we will be looking at the pre owned market.

Are there any particular brands that you would suggest we look at or avoid ?

We have narrowed things down to the fact we want a fixed bed, preferably an island bed. But thats about as far as we have got so far.

It seems an absolute minefield out there.

Thanks
Graeme

The first thing to consider is what your car can tow. Check the handbook and V5 for the kerb weight and max towing weights, the look for caravans with a max weight(MTPLM) around 85% of kerb weight unless the tow limit is lower.

Some cars may not be able to tow at all so check before you get carried away and end up having to change car as well as buying a caravan.

All caravans need to be checked carefully, damp is the biggest problem so ask for the service reports with damp check figures and get a caravan engineer to carry out a pre purchase check before buying privately.

You should find plenty of choice within your budget however you still need to check the car weights. There is a large variation in the kerb weights depending on the exact model, engine and transmission over the years and this will impact on what you can safely tow.

do not go by the hand book info, you need to check with either your log book or your vin plate, preferably the latter as that is what the police will use if you get pulled over, also handbooks are generic, the true limits vary between models hence the need to use the vin plate/log book info

The handbook may say 2400kg but that is not the max weight for towing a caravan safely at motorway speeds, the manufacturers max towing limit is the max weight the car can tow to perform a hill start. Most people will agree that the caravan should not exceed the kerb weight of the car and the 85% guideline is for novice caravanners to enable them to gain some towing experience safely. The 85% guideline is just a guideline not a law and going a touch heavier, say 88%, would be ok but the closer you get to 100% the risks of instability increase.

Have a look at the advice given by the major clubs or published in magazines etc and you will see the advice about 85% guidelines and kerb weights quoted everywhere.

In recent years it has been mentioned that some insurance companies have quoted that they will not cover car and caravan combinations where the caravan exceeds a certain percentage of the weight of the tow car so that is another consideration.

Whatever your car model weighs you should be able to tow most of the easily available island bed caravans in the UK apart from a few of the very heavy luxury models which weigh more than your car will but you still need to check and be aware of the weights involved.

A very capable car however most caravans with island bed are twin axle and have a MTPLM of 1800 or above. Kerbweight of the Q5 is about 1800kg depending on the model as there are several versions of the Q5.

Also remember that the car may be capable of towing up to 2400kg, but if its kerbweight is 1850kg in an emergency the caravan will be controlling the car putting everyone in danger.

Best is to buy from a dealership paying a deposit using a credit card and also using finance. That way you are well protected if anything goes wrong. Most people are very happy with their purchase, but unfortunately you only read of the complaints.

fixed beds take up a lot of space.. which in essence means a much larger caravan than one without the fixed bed.. if you intend to do some real touring i would avoid them but that is just my thoughts and it does depend on how many towing miles you are going to do..

Our 2017 caravan has a fixed Island transverse bed and is single axle and we had the weight upgrade to 1500kg from about 1450kg and there are plenty out there around that weight.

We’ve had two fixed Island bed caravans in the past, one was a Sterling Elite and the other was a Swift 580 both single axle vans. The Swift was the heaviest, coming in at around 1640 kg.

We in the end got rid of both of them as the layout didn’t work for us, especially the Sterling as the mid bathroom arrangement we couldn’t get on with felt too claustrophobic.

We now have two fixed singles on a twin axle which we find suits us much better. My advice would be check what you can tow, then look as many different layouts as you can to see what suits you best before you commit to a particular caravan.

Here is my vin plate

As far as im aware i subtract the first number from the second number, and as limited as my maths is i can work that out as 2400. So my understanding is that the maximum towing capacity is 2400kg ??

Or am i wrong ?

Your maths is correct but as mentioned several times already you need to check your kerb weight. If you refer to my post at 7.55am I have tried to explain what the manufacturers limit means.

Your kerb weight could be anywhere from about 1650kg to 2000kg and you need to use this as your guide to towing a caravan. As mentioned by Ian earlier you don't want the situation of the tail wagging the dog especially at motorway speeds. If your car weight is 1650kg and you have an accident whilst towing a 2400kg wobbly box on wheels at 60mph in strong side winds you may find your insurance company may not be very helpful.

Hi Graeme

Just to add to what Rob has said.

The car's towing capacity of (4840 - 2440) = 2400kg, as shown on the VIN plate, is based largely on the weight of a trailer - not a high-sided caravan - that the car can physically move from a standing hill start in first gear. It does not in any way mean that a caravan of that weight would not become unstable on the motorway at 60mph in windy conditions, or that it would not take the car with it before you as the driver had time to react. It is for this reason that the caravanning industry recommends that you do not tow a caravan that weighs more than the car's kerb weight, even if the car is physically and legally capable of doing so.

For most large cars the kerb weight is about 500-600kg less than its maximum permissible weight as shown on the VIN plate (so most likely about 1800kg in your case). Going for a caravan with an MTPLM lower than this will still give you a wide choice.

Obviously bed sizes are a subjective and personal issue, however, personally I've never understood why fixed beds are such a big issue for so many people, especially when they're almost always too small. I don't think I've yet come across a fixed bed, even in the largest 8-foot wide caravans that isn't narrower than a standard double and therefore something that Rose and I (both of whom, admittedly, are not exactly small) would really struggle to sleep in. And when you're not asleep, they take up a huge amount of space.

By contrast, the front lounge in our caravan converts into a king size bed and takes less than 10 minutes to make up and dismantle at the start and end of each day. With the addition of a £100 mattress topper I often sleep better on that than I do at home, and it means that we can happily holiday in a caravan that is smaller, lighter and easier to manage than would otherwise be the case.
