Hi everyone, we are now thinking if ditching our Tent days and moving on and buying our first caravan. We are looking at mainly a 6 berth but are overwhelmed with all the manufacturers and all variations. The one we think looks great is the ‘Swift Challenger 630 SE’. Brilliant looking unit and what we would call an ideal caravan, but is this the Rolls-Royce of caravans and would we get more for our money by choosing a different mftr?

Our best course of action of course would be to pop into a few caravan showrooms and have a look about and get the feel of some.

We also love the idea of the motor movers on the wheels, which we just watched a person using at the caravan site we have just been at (rented caravan)

Any advise in choosing a first caravan would be highly appreciated everyone, and hints and tips also welcome :)

The first thing you need to think about is the car that you will be towing it with as that will be a heavy caravan, if you give us the details and weights of your car and the weights of the caravan we could give you some good advice.

One of first considerations is the car you are going to tow it with, as a 6 berth caravan is going to need a fairly hefty tow car. In this respect, older caravans tend to be lighter and won't need as big or powerful a car to tow them.

Then come all the other questions, such as budget, and what layout would suit your family best, You definitely need to take a look around and see what your requirements are, make a list of what you want and just as importantly don't want. There is no perfect answer, as what suits one family perfectly would be completely wrong for another. Obviously the higher your budget the more choices you will have.

Motor movers are great, but they add to the cost and also detract to some extent on your load-carrying capacity.

Some good points Colin, yes we have a budget in mind and for our first caravan I think between 10-15k would be reasonable?

Do you think buying privately would be much cheaper than buying from a showroom second hand?

Sorry but we are completely clueless on what mftr caravans are better than the other, and what to look for when viewing, like areas that could rot etc

Most caravans seem to have some sort of problem/s, when we bought ours new we had a list as long as your arm some worse than others some really stupid things things that should have been sorted by the manufacturer or the dealer and we ended up taking it back to the dealer umpteen times. You won't have all that as you are looking at second hand. Yes buying privately will be cheaper and as you haven't had a caravan before I would advise that you buy from a localish reputable dealer as you will have some sort of warranty. Most manufacturers will do two or three different levels and makes of caravan. The foreign built caravans seem to be better built in my opinion, the Swift you are looking at is a mid range caravan.
Not knowing the exact details of your car I had a quick look and it looks like your kerb weight would be about 2010 giving you an 85% match of 1700kgs which is what is recommended for a novice tower although this is not set in stone and the Swift Challenger 630SE weighs 1800kg giving you a match of 90% which is still o.k but I wouldn't want to go much higher than that, you wouldn't be the first person saying weights wouldn't be a problem but they are as there are a lot heavier caravans out there than the Challenger. It might be an idea to do a bit of research before you buy as there are a lot of other things you need to know regarding speed limits, towing mirrors, not using outside lane on motorways etc etc etc.
A good read through this forum is recommended.
My finger hurts and I'm going to drink my cup of tea now.

I think the Q5 3.0 only has a kerbweight of about 1870kg although it can tow up to 2400kg. The 40 & 45 are even lighter so both restrict your choice of twin axle.

I don't think the Swift 630 you mention would be an ideal caravan to be towing with a Q5 as its MTPLM is probably over 1800kg. You need to be looking for a caravan with a maximum MTPLM of about 1750kg if you have the 3.0 to be on the safe side as you may be a novice at towing a caravan. If the 40 or 45 then the maximum MTPLM is well under 1700kg and the safe side would be a caravan with MTPLM of 1650kg.

Saying which caravan is better than others is just like saying which car is best. A lot depends on luck, as there are good ones and rogue ones in every batch from every manufacturer, and someone will condemn one make that others think is the greatest. In all probability there is not that much to choose between the makes, and British or foreign probably makes little difference either, although you will find some that say it does.

Buying second-hand adds to the problems as you never know how the previous owner has treated it. Having said that our caravan is not only second-hand, we don't know how many owners it has had as it is 31 years old! We paid £1,100 for it 6 years ago and it is still going strong, although I did have to do some repairs to it this year. When we bought it we thought it looked like it had hardly ever been used. It seems that some older caravans were better built than more recent ones, and from what I have read on here some people have had far more problems with their 5 year old vans than we have had with ours.

I wouldn't recommend buying privately unless you take someone with you who is a caravan expert when you view it. Damp is the biggest caravan-killer known to man, and if you find any it is usually much worse than it at first appears. If you buy from a dealer you have some comeback.

Layout can make a big difference too. You need to carefully look at a few and decide which would work best for you. We all have very different needs, and there are more different layouts than you can imagine, so what is perfect for one family could be a nightmare to live with for someone else. Good luck, I hope you find what you are looking for.

Hi folks, some great advise and we will most certainly not be rushing into things

at iank01

I have done a quick Google and found the below regarding kerb weight for an Audi SQ5 2020 model, does that help?

Take a look at https://towcar.info/. You can use this as a rough guide as to whether you car can tow a specific model of caravan. Its free but double check the information it gives because sometimes the weights are a little bit out.

Always always always get a damp report no matter how genuine you think the sellers are. My first caravan was kept in dry storage and seller had it serviced a month previously, had all the paperwork was original purchaser but despite the recent service I was too naive to realise there should have been a damp report present. Several areas of damp showed up when I got it serviced a year later.

Please please DO NOT use towcar info as the figures they use are not for British spec cars and they do not use the kerb weights, so this means their figures are usually way out. I have been telling people this for 10yrs or more.

How much does a yearly caravan inspection report cost roughly?

And does the inspection include the damp report, or is this a separate yearly report

I will tell you what ours costs from an approved workshop mobile engineer in Gloucestershire.
Single axle annual service, includes chassis, habitation, gas and damp test report £210,twin axle is £240.
Local dealer single axle £275 twin axle £315 + all the hassle of delivering and collecting. The prices vary from area to area but this will give you some idea.
