Can anyone recommend a wheel clamp please? I'd like one that meets the Gold Sold Secure standard.

I've currently got a Milenco and it is a swine to take off (especially if the van has settled in soft ground) and transport (very sharp edges).

I was looking at a Nemesis Wheel Clamp WC100N (http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/redirect.asp?redir=http://www.towsure.com/product.asp?p=13026). Does anyone have one? Are they easy to fit, remove and transport?

Can anyone recommend anything else please?

Thanks

Be careful choosing a clamp.... I know having a gold standard clamp is re-assuring but be aware that recently in the bike press it has been found that you can pick a barrel lock with pen refill and there is a easily bought tool which is designed to pick barrel locks.I know there are tools to pick any lock but a pen refill is just stupid.

Perhaps I should ask the question differently - which wheel clamp do you use and what do you think of it (good and bad)?

Thanks!

Rather frightening that you can "pick" a barrel lock with a pen refill or an "easily bought tool" - morepower, do you which bike mag the article was in as I'd like to have a read of it?

Here is what they call the Bic Trick. http://thirdrate.com/kryptonite_files/2.mov

http://thirdrate.com/kryptonite/  This is the same for all barrel locks. It seems they can be opened very easily. Oxford products recalled almost 1/4 of a million Pounds worth of locks because initially they claimed it was a false claim, Bike Magazine and MCN proved it was not only possible but well known among criminals.

I know many will just be happy to put on a gold standard clamp but a good criminal will know how to take it off regardless !!! I think I will stick to a more traditional key type lock !!!!

Just to add kyptonite locks now do not use barrel lock mech's at all they were possibly the biggest seller of barrel locks world wide but since this has come out they have stopped all sales of tht type of lock !! As you can see in this link in 2000 they sold $27 Million and they had to change the design in, 2003-4 because of the problems they have now gone back to an internal tumbler design.

http://www.kryptonitelock.com/inetisscripts/abtinetis.exe/templateform at public?tn=about_history.tem

I know many manufacturers would hate me for saying this and telling you the problems with barrel locks because they are so cheap to buy. BUT your van is worth more than a £3.00 lock which can be picked with a pen which you could even have laying about in your van!! How about that for adding insult to injury. Open your van find a pen then steal the whole thing !!!!

I have not seen the Bic trick, thanks for that.  I am in the camp that views wheel clamps, hitchlocks etc as a deterent only.  I do not believe they will stop the theft but merely cause a little in convenience to the $%$%$ taking the caravan.

Go for gold standard and buy the best you can afford.  I agree about the Milenco, a real P.I.T A. to fit.  I used a dryslip spray and it has improved it.  Milenco have the new clap filled with concrete to stop attack from oxy torch.

Mark. I don't understand how anyone can see there is a problem but will still spend money,in some cases a large amount of money on a product which will fail with nothing more than a piece of plastic. If you pay almost £200 for a wheel clamp which can resist an oxy torch but not a small piece of plastic I think something should be done to stop manufacturers selling this type of product. If they use a better lock which is not as easy as a barrel lock to pick then I would buy one no problem.

I was not defending the lock on the Milenco.  Trust me they will get it off quicker with an oxy torch or other.  It matters not which clamp / lock you have.  If they want it they will have it.  Insurance companies insist on typically wheel and hitch lock. They tend to like the "tried and tested" ones that get the Sold Secure etc type approval.  There will always be some one who finds an easy way to beat a lock.  I seem to recall that early central locking systems where prone to a tennis ball.

As I said it is mearley a means of slowing them down.  I have heard of vans with multiple clamps and locks of varying kinds getting nicked.  Streuth they even like to put moats round storage compounds now to stop them nicking it through the fence and over the field.

Mark I understand what you are saying but manufacturers must know these problems and hope we as customers never find out these problems........ I have come from another industry where these issues have been known for a while and as we are new to caravanning I try to stick with things I know will work.If there is nothing I feel will deter theft of my vehicle I suppose I am just stuck. I like the AL-CO receiver but the barrel lock is still a problem and IF I could find something which uses a different key system I would use that 100%. As you say some wheel clamps are a deterent but if you have a deterent make it time consuming to get round. Many security chain manufacturers will claim there chain is impossible or almost impossible to cut using bolt croppers.... I know of only one chain which is! The chain makers say using a £250 set of bolt croppers to test their chain is unreasonable. Many criminals will use expensive tools because that is their job ! So buy the best tools for that job I mean you steal one van and how much will they sell it for??? A damn sight more than a £250 set of bolt croppers !!!

I do understand insurance companies requiring "tried and tested" Clamps and locks. My only real worry is when this all becomes an issue and this type of lock is not part of the approval. If it is very common knowledge that the Barrel lock is not secure insurance companies will then require that you buy new clamps and locks. I know there are clamps which use internal tumblers and they do have approval. I would suggest you stick to that type of system.  If insurance specs change they will not foot the bill we will have to stand the extra cost !!!

I spotted this one in me Caravan Club mag and it's from Towsure and on special offer until the 30th June. Reduced from £99.99 down to £89.99Nemesis Wheel Clamp - Choice of the DVLA

Dunno if that's the one your link was going to, coz it didn't work for me today, but I personally, think this orange one is very......pwitty! Probably good at deterring the scumbags too?

We're using some big red thing at the moment that we got on special offer at the caravan shop when we got our new van and our old bulldog wouldn't fit the alloy wheels. Can't remember if it's a Millenco one, but have a feeling it is, (and you're right about them being a PITA to fit, but hubby's getting the hang of it!)

I have used a Bulldog Hitchlock and Wheel Clamp on the previous van. Found them both easy to fit, bit they do use the round key.

Newer van came with a Millenco, which is more difficult to fit (and also uses the round key). I have sprayed the sliding parts of the Millenco with silicon spray and it has made this a lot easier to fit. Not sure if I will persevere with this or look at changing it.

We also have an Alko Hitchlock which fits around the Alko head and is very easy to use (conventional key), and a set of Rear stabiliser locks which were fitted as part of a Gold package from Thiefbeaters (http://www.thiefbeaters.co.uk/leisure/leis_home.html). This lot got us a discount from Bakers of Cheltenham on our insurance.

Morning all,

I read this yesterday with interest. As always, and hopefully you guys know, I always avoid plugging/criticising companies on UKCS (we stock lots of brands so hopefully I can be considered kind of impartial), but I was fascinated by this thread and wanted to get feedback from the people themselves - hence a very long conversation with Milenco's technical manager this morning.

Basically, the bic trick first came to light in 1993 in relation to motorbike locks and they have been fully aware of it since it caused a storm 13 years ago. They are of the opinion that some very cheap barrel locks can be picked in this way (although the key to doing it isn't shown on the video above) but that their's are totally inpregnable to this form of attack. Something to do with the quality of the lock, the number of pins and the diameter of the lock.

Milenco have offered £500 to anyone who can pick one of their locks in this way - of course, this would need to be backed up with video evidence. Perhaps most importantly, they have said they cannot be held liable for any damage caused to clamps by people taking up the challenge (in the majority of cases, the bic breaks in the lock).

Good luck if you want to go for it, but be careful!!!!

Have a good weekend if I don't pop on later,

JT

At Milenco we have been aware of the "Biro" technique since 1993. Simply if you buy a low cost, low quality lock typically made in china then do not be suprised if it can be opened this way. Quality Radial Pin Tumber locks (the one's with with round keys) such as we use cannot be opened this way. We test hundreds of attack methods on our products and what hapens with this technique on a Mega Wheelclamp is when the biro cools the end snaps off and jams the lock so please don't try it at home unless your wheelclamp is open and you are happy to buy a new lock. Following the article in the Motorcycle press about 2 years ago countless motorcyclists were stranded after kids had tried this on disc locks.  The real problem was never really explained in the motorcycle press. The problem was basically the locks were made down to such a low price, that the parts were very inaccurate and therefore not secure. It is not a deign weakness with Radial Pin Tumber lock. In the motorcycle trade they now use flat key locks because of the publicity, but again the low cost chinese produced locks are still vunerable to simple techniques. Another problem not really explained in the motorcycle press was that many of the insecure producs were sold secure approved.  We believe good quality samples were approved by sold secure but then the products manufactured and imported were inferior to those approved. Our Wheelclamps by the way are also approved by the only acredited security standard for caravans SCM ( www.scm.nl ). We belive this is a better standard for security but currently we are the only manufacturer in the UK to offer both SCM and sold secure product. So we would say if you are worried about security do not buy chinese produce security products. Buy Milenco or at the very least buy British Made security.

Hi Milenco.......

It seems I have had a reaction with a few people but all I want is for customers to have the best items for the job... Not just some big intimidating lump which a 5 year old could open. Now you say there is a £500 offer to anyone who can open your lock.. I think you have confidence in your product and I would feel safer if that were the case with all manufacturers. I know many companies use cheaper components and this is where the problem comes from. I still refuse to use this type of lock on my bike but only because no one stands by their products and are willing to put a hand into their own pockets to show they have the guts to open themselves up to testing!! Great stuff I hope it makes other manufacturers think about what they use and offer their products to be tested by " criminal " testers!

Your email which you sent shows you feel as strongly about your products as I feel about mine...GOOD. I hope you do get one tested and shown to be very secure. If you do I will say here and now I will buy your products and feel happy you have done your home work.

As I said in my email reply to you " Some companies charge a lot of money and if your product is safe then good. I would not expect less than your response." I know you know of my products and what we do so you will know we do not sell budget items and even though some feel we do sell expensive products the benefits are open to scrutiny. I would never put my name to a poor sub standard product. You seem to be the same! BUT many are only bothered about profit and will cut corners just to take sales from people like us. In the end I can sleep well at night and if we sold cheap nasty products I would not feel I am doing my job!

Sorry to have made you feel like you are under the microscope.. you are just part of the industry. If others can do what you do I would feel better spending my money. I hope you understand where I am coming from and as I said if you have full confidence in your product I would spend money with you.
