Hello all

I bought a Maxol Monte Carlo oven secondhand a few weeks back and installed it myself. It's performance is pretty disapointing. The other half says its only good for keeping things warm. (struggles to stay at 150C when food is in it).

Is there anyone out there perhaps with this model of oven who can tell me weather this is the performance to be expected (it is an older model after all)? Or should I suspect a blocked jet or some other problem?

hi there Simon Stevenson, we have the same oven in our van, and to be honest its the same as yours. i say to the wife, it would be better to huff on food, it would warm it up a bit faster.   to be truthful though, they do work but they tend to take a while to heat your food up. dunno what it would be like to try to cook a roast joint in it.....

That was me gary,These ovens should get hot enough,mine used to.I'm gonna rip it out again and check every pipe i can.They are not themostatically controlled,or at least mine isn't.

There's nothing worse than getting on site and popping my asda findaloo meal deal in the monte carlo and still being sat waiting an hour later.

what did you use to clean everything out metz,i've got some carb and choke cleaner in an aerosol that dries without leaving any residue,would that do the trick?

What I think Metz was talking about is the steel gas pipes rusting internally as there is always some moisture present in the pipework. Over time this can build up then flake off and collect in the bottom of the pipe leading to the jet. This is what I was thinking when I said a tiny piece of dirt could be dislodged by the extra pressure of the Propane only this time it looks like there was a lot of tiny bits!!

Seen the same thing on a couple of fridges and a gas fire so no reason for it not to effect ovens, to be sure though you have found the problem try to catch anything that is in there in a small bag because it won't actually be much in total.

Just thought I'd update you. I took the oven out and removed the jet, the steel fitting it was screwed into and the z shaped steel pipe which comes from the starter button. The pipe seemed clear so I focussed on the jet/steel fitting. Sure enough there were one or two loose bits of what looked to be rust plus some calortite inside. I boiled both in soapy water for half hour as Gary suggested but there were still bits in there which wouldnt shift so I soaked them in meths for a couple of days then flushed everything through using a wide guage needle and syringe before re assembly.

The oven seems to work ok now. The gas comes out with s satisfying hiss (was totally silent before). I was encouraged by that so I cooked a couple of part baked bagettes in it and they came out ok (brown on top!) in the specified time. I wouldn't have dared try that before.

 I meant to boil the jet if it appeared to be covered in grease/fat from cooking which sometimes happens. Calortite and similar products are best removed as you did with a solvent such as meths or cellulose thinners. It does prove though how tiny changes in the jet size can effect gas flow and performance, this is why poking around with anything hard that might enlarge the jet even minutely is frowned on.

Anyway glad all now seems well with yours and hopefully the two others

Just goes to show how carefully I read posts! I'd advise anyone doing the same to get hold of a syringe if they can as it made light work of flushing out those difficult to remove bits.

I have the Maxol Oven in my 1994 Fleetwood, and it is as good as the oven in the house, no problem at all, despite its age it is in showroom condition, the previous owners must have never used it...........so in new condition they work fine.  I would check all the pipes, and maybe check the gas valve near the oven, that is where any dirt in the pipe is likely to accumulate.
