nice one MickeyM

I wouldnt advise buying a new van just yet, get used deffo and work your way up we are and its so much fun and very rewarding when you move up...ours was just short of £4000 we paid cash private sale and its lovely a 4 berth (5 with king at front) with end bathroom and side dinette !! its lovely and woudlnt swap it for anything!!

Iwouldnt advise buying from a delaer I have said this before they will take you for every penny they can squeeze out of you and beleive you me they squeeze both ends !!

go look round their forecourts get advice look inside get a feel for them, you will know which layout suits you soon by doing this, I knew as oon as I saw my Abbey it was for us, I could see us all in there, it felt right....you will know what i mean !!!

then when your ready to buy really look around, all over the internet is brilliant for this!! you will find places you never even knew existed !!

I kwould deffo get a cheapo though to try it out in, we were lucky i managed to borrow one, or you could even go halves and share one!! bit of a mine field that though so be careful !! make sure its someone you really really trust !!

good luck and let us know how you get on !!

Dealer or private sale is a contentious issue.

Private wil probably be cheaper, but dealers are covered by lots of legislation that offers you some protection. Just imagine paying 7500 for a van, it rains like last weekend, privately bought its your problem, dealer bought you have some comeback.

buy private if you can that way you get most of the extras you need, i think dealers take every thing out and sell them separate

A word of warning- it's an expensive business initially! You ideally need: insurance (£200+) hitchlock (£50+) wheelclamp (£50+) maybe a tracker (£500+) a waste master (£40), an aquaroll (£40), awning, (£150 - £800+) etc...plus storage...it all adds up.

Whatever you do, have fun!

I wish we had gone to the same shop as you for hitchlock, wheelclamp, tracker etc especially insurance as we would have saved a bundle.   We paid nearly £2500 for all of the above.

we took delivery of a brand new caravan 5 weeks ago having been tent camping for a few years - i am now lying on my bed in my tent listening to the heavy rain wishing i was in my caravan and knowing that if i was i wouldn't have to pack away in the rain

take your time though to decide what suits you best.

We started out with a 6 berth frame tent, then quick erect dome tent, then trailer tent, then two folding campers (penine then pathfinder) then a 1999 caravan and have just taken delivery of a brand new caravan. No, we're not really old but have been doing this camping lark for 20 years and I think we have worked our way up gradually to a brand new van!!

Oh and it is gorgeous!!!!!!!

If you get a cheap starter van you will not need all the above it depends what you get....

would you be happy to insure a £500 van, is it worth it? weigh that one up

Hitchlock is a must I think, you can get these on ebay

I dont have a wheel clamp

A Tracker???? no need unless its a brand spanker

wastemaster and aquaroll can come later, you can get other water carriers, and a set of wheels for now, even so the yare cheaper than the above at mitchells if you buy both together

awning - if you get a van big enough for you all you dont need one just yet again this can come later, we have a 4 berth that comfortably sleeps all 5 of us and we only use our awning for long stays, hardly worth it just for the weekend....

so oyu see its not really that expensive and most of the above are not'needs' as such just 'nice to haves'

please dont be put off, just take your time.

what you will 'need' though is, a gas bottle now theres no substitute there is there, unless you can run your cokker on electric and have an eleftic fire and boiler....

£30 deposit full, then approx £15 to refill

you will need pots pans, and sleeping bags or duvets....

a Tow bar, doesnt 'have' to be twin electrics you can use single. dont forget to check the weights of your unit as well, make sure your car is suitable.

a hook up lead, you will need this unless you plan to run off your battery all the time....personally I wouldnt recomend this but others may think differently.

I cant think of anything else for now, its early and im still fuzzy.

Have fun and let us know how you get on.....

Youch! Who's your insurance with?

We got the insurance from the Camping and Caravanning club (a shade under £200 for a 2004 'van); having the tracker and tyron bands fitted made quite a difference in the premium, we also got 5% off for OH having done their towing course. Not a lot, but better than a slap with a wet fish...

We'd bought the wheelclamp (Euroclamp) and hitchlock (?) for the folding camper originally, can't remember how much they cost but knowing us we wouldn't have paid much more than £50 each (being tight). Got both the wastemaster and the aquaroll secondhand via Fridayad (again being tight), and have gritted our teeth and bought the infamous PDQ porch awning for £155 from Towsure. I'm kicking myself about the tracker - we paid £530 to have if fitted via the dealer, and would have saved ourselves £60 in total (free motion sensor and a year's free membership) if we'd have got the Caravan and Camping club tracker fitted. Didn't realise they would visit the dealer for you...grrrrr...

Happy caravanning!!
