Thanks Malc

That's a shame. We originally bought our van, after having been camping for years, because we found we weren't deciding on impulse to go away for a weekend - too much trouble to put up the tent. We'd hoped the van would change all that, but it seems that if we wake up on a Friday morning and say "Let's go away for the weekend" we're going to be unlucky (unless it's in November!)

I think you can still say the "lets go away for the weekend" but you have to be prepared to do quite a bit of phoning around and accept much more of a compromise on your location. Cancellations do happen and if you are lucky it is just before you have phoned. If not you have to press on with more calls

I have done this many times with an intended targetted spot only to have to settle on somewhere entirely different, but it nearly always ended up quite well.

The main obvious problem is that more and more people are caravanning/camping than there are new sites appearing, so this can only get worse unfortunately.

Until people get bored with it I suppose.

I'd post your question re the boat as a new topic Malc. It probably won't get noticed in here.

Thanks Doug, I have a few other questions that could do with answers so I will do some research first and ask if I cannot sort.

Hiya

we are members of both and it depends on what you are looking for in a site really.

CC club sites are well maintained and very clean but tend to have the appearance of carparks - lots of hard standing and all in neat rows. Lots of rules and mainly older people who are retired so they can feel rather sterile and empty.

CC&C sites are more natural with a lot more grass pitches, older facilities but still very clean. More families, still lots of rules but they seem to have more life to them somehow.

The good thing about CC is you can pre-book all your weekends without having to pay a deposit so you know that you are guaranteed weekends away throughout the summer months when things can get really booked up.

C&CC make you pay a deposit but I believe that if you have to cancel for whatever reason that deposit will go into a holding account and you can use it on your next booking.

We like both clubs - you get a monthly magazine and each are cheaper to stay at than the commercial sites plus you get a nicer class of person I think. No chavs, no loud music or drunkenness or if you do get that it is dealt with by the wardens.

Also of course you get to go on the rallies that both of them hold and they are very cheap and in fields so probably a bit more close to nature again.

I would recommend both clubs for different reasons so it depends on your family circumstances.

We have been members of the C&CC for 38 years and also holiday site managers for the same for 14 years, therefore we are probably biased in their favour. They have a great variety of sites and many holiday sites run on a voluntary basis which are usually around a fiver a night per unit. Also a Big Sites Book with 100's of certificated sites all over the country.
They also run international sites with help from their Carefree service on the travel.
All the info is on the web site.
We cannot give any comment on the CC as we have never been members. We have found all we need from the C&CC.

have been member of both for 15 years & will continue for folowwing reasons

C&CC  offers 30% age discount  on sites already cheaper than Cc & also charges per person with no pitch fee unless elec required.

CC sites of equal quality  so being in both vatly increases access to good sites

Cc  has more CLs than C&CCs similar CSs

Varies from year to year which offers best ferry crosing value.so being in both can saave money

CC has by far the best travel insurance package, being specialy tilored to needs of caravanners, trailer tenters etc. I know I have claimed on it

CC  provides first class caravan inurance, house & car insurance at very good rates

C&CC has unique temporary holiday sites run by members & very cheap to use.

C& CC  has activity based sub groups e. Folk song & dance group, canoe group, folding camper group, Youth Group, mountaineering group etc all of which arrange regualr events throughout the year. The CC has no equivelant.

C&CC offers more in the way of 'District Association' camping for those who like to camp  with others of similar mind.

All in all I find the services offered by the two clubs to be mainly very complimentary to each other with of coure some inevitable duplication.

For the sake of an extra 65 - 70 pence a week just join them both and be done with it. The magzines are well worth the money even if you don't use the sites. If you do use the sites then 4 - 5 nights and your mebership is paid for anyway.
