Cornwall is certainly worth the journey, I'd say it's too far for a wek but if you're going for two or more then the whole county is lovely. We go to the Mevagissey area which is not far from Fowey, you'll be there in a few minutes from Fowey same as you will if you go to the Eden project, just head for St Austell from Fowey & you'll find it easy.

If you can, I suggest a trip across to the Isles of scilly, you'll get there by sea or air from Penzance, it's costly to get thee but like stepping back in time 30 years.

The site off J11 M5 is a nice looking little site, you'll find it by leaving the M5 at J11, take the first exit off roundabout, go to next roundabout & take first exit, the site is on the left within yards.

Myself, I would rather go for the services if it was just an overnight stop, tis is a personal choice but I'd go for this option because I could pull in any of them without planning & leave when I want to carry on my journey. Whichever you do, enjoy your trip to Cornwall & let us know how you get on when you get home.

when we do the Devon run from Carlisle we use  Blackmore CC site about 15 mins off the M5 near Worcester and we are off there Monday for a week for a change. Totally agree with the advice of get past M6/M5 interchange and then stopover and leave reasonably early for a stress free run then again maybe we have been lucky

It is [absolutely] worth the journey, we've been to Cornwall about eight times in the last fifteen years and Devon in 2002.

We're heading to Devon again on Friday [from Leeds] and know we'll have a great time.

Of course it's not a rip-off, it's the same as every other UK coastal town which inflates it's prices to survive.

If you live there and have to suffer it day in and day out then of course it's going to bother you.

As I said, I've been that way plenty of times and being ripped off has never, ever crossed my mind.

An alternative would be Wales perhaps?  I understand Tenby and surrounding area has great beaches without the crowds.

I realise your question wasn't aimed at me but I'll answer it anyway. We go to Pentewan Sands near Mevagissey, it's great especially if you have kids as it's right on the beach. Another lovely site is Seaview international also near mevagissey, this site is really lovely, very well kept. Google either, you'll love cornwal where ever you go.

Having been prompted to return to the thread because of addit. posts, the only downside of the journey is after leaving the M5.

The A30 is really painful, especially the first weekend the kids break up [from school] and this, coupled with the fact that we've been to Cornwall many times, is why we chose North Devon.

I'm hoping to shave at least an hour off my journey this time.

Sorry to contradict you Kenles but the A30 is by far the quickest route into Cornwall. The A30 is now a dual carriageway virtually all the way to Truro, with the exception of a very short section on Bodmin Moor at Temple.

A38 is full of roadworks not least of which is the work on the Dobwalls by-pass which will hold traffic up all year.

The only reason to use the A38 would be if you were going to somewhere like Looe or another part of southeast Cornwall.

And to add to what others have said, Cornwall is not a rip off. Holiday makers, or emits as they are called down here, are very welcome. Without you the county would not be what it is but please just remember to leave it as you found it for the benefit of us who live here all year round.

Isn`t "emits" cornish for ants and because Cornwall is a popular destination so many holiday makers coming down in the summer like a swarm of ants lol. I have heard a local use that expression when I was down there. Have heard another expression in another part of the UK, calling tourists "BT`s" (Bl**dy Tourists) lol.

I second the recommendation to use the A30.  We drove to Eden Project from Exeter the other day going down the A38.  Fine to Plymouth then boy, boring boring boring with roadworks galore and single carriageway roads.  I came back via Bodmin and the A30 and it was a much nicer route until the accident on the outskirts of Exeter but that's another story!

Ah and the North Devon linkroad from Tiverton up to Barnstaple is known to be a car park and accident prone too so don't bank on it being quick.
