In all the years of caravanning,

We only rinse out the aquaroll with puriclean once a year,

ALWAYS drink the water from it,

AND can't recall the last time we had a tummy bug.

Too much fuss can be made about the whole water thing, how many people go to the trouble of sterilising this and that only to be seen handling the pump and pipe with dirty hands and even putting it on the floor while they fetch the water.

If proper hygiene procedures are followed then their shouldn't be a problem.

We never put the tops on whilst they are standing empty in between trips because they can never be emptied fully their is always a dribble in the botom this could become stagnant if the tops were on.       Instead we use the nylon from a pair of tights 9clean of course) doubled and stretched over the tops and secured with elastic bands, this lets the air into the container and the water can dry out, without letting in any dust particles e.t.c.

I think in this country we worry a lot unduly.  Our dog prefers water from puddles to tap water.  Is this perhaps because she can taste the added chemicals?  As was said above how often are the plastic pipes delivering the water on site tested or indeed your own household pipes.  You will probably take in more germs from food preparation areas than the water system.
It's probably because she can't turn the tap on!!!

We do our aquarol with milton before leaving home, however, we never drink water from it, it's only used for showering & washing up. Any drinking water or water for the kettle is fetched fresh from the mains water tap.

We milton the system at the beginning of each season and then forget about it!  I dont drink tap water anyway preferring bottles (no reason except for personal preference) and wouldn't be bothered sterilising before or after each outing anyway.  On a lighter note, on the odd occasion when I've partaken of more than my normal share of red wine and have a thirst in the night I drink the tap water then, and I'm still alive to tell the tale after camping for many years.  It all comes down to personal opinion really.

Just a question nothing meant by it, but why do you do it with milton if you only use the water for washing?surely you are making a lot of work for yourself.

I always sterilise before each outing i no this may sound daft but i use milton to do the barrels and puriclean to do the caravan pipes, we drink water from the taps never been ill. Surely the water from caravan site taps have to be of the same standard as those at your home they would'nt be able to operate if it was'nt

"but i use milton to do the barrels and puriclean to do the caravan pipes,"

Is there a reason why you use two different sterilisers?  I am just wondering if I am missing something.  I have been filling my barrel with puriclean and then pumping it through the caravan pipes.  I then leave it in both for 8 - 12 hours and flush through with clean water.  I agree with drinking from the taps - we haven't had any problem yet.

Mainly because the pump pipes go slimey after awhile and so does the barrel.  Well fro us anyway.

I doubt it is the barrels causing any stomach issues.  It is probaly the water residue left in the pipes after you have drained down the system when packing up.  A little water stays in the system and after awhile I guess fungi must start growing as it is dank and dark.

That's a matter of opinion Janx, I actually use the contents of the aquarol to flush the system through with milton so I'm not washing my dishes up in unsafe water. I guess I should have added that line. I suppose with a filter in line it should be safe to drink as well but I choose not to.

Lots if not most of our friends drink the aquarol water & as far as I know they do it with no problems but as we pitch close to a tap I prefer to go to the tap for anything going to be drunk. This is where I probably make work for myself as the auarol water is very likely to be fine to drink.

I agree, we were horrified when we dismantled the pump when it stopped working properly - we had black slime, and areas where the pump plastic and the inside of the flexible pipes had actually turned black (like those black spots you sometimes can't remove in damp bathrooms).  Some people have mentioned black slimy bits in the water tank used to flush the loo - well it was like that, but thick and solid!   Uuugggh.  We still drink the site water, but fill a container each day.

4 heaped tablespoons of Bicarbonate of Soda fill up with water roll it around tip up and leave it to stand for 24hours.

That’s what Aquaroll advise. No harsh chemicals and won’t taint the barrel

Milton after a while corrodes the heater element and is not recommended by truma.Puriclean is used by the breweries to clean out their systems.

Milton will kill most germs but will not get rid of any build up in a caravan system use Puriclean be safe.
