Meine Güte! Was ich ist dabei seiend zu tun, wenn ich das Vereinigte Königreich bereisen will, wenn jeder so um meinen deutschen Wohnwagen und die Tür besorgt ist, die auf der falschen Seite ist!

 A caravan site owner in Normandie told me that some French sites don't allow twin axle vans because that what the travellers over there use! (Sign is "interdite aux caravans à deux essieu")

He had had problems with them making a mess and leaving without paying!

Sometimes it is because the pitches are too small!

They will sometimes alllow bookings  by prior arrangement. i.e. tourists!

How many of you have been asked what van you have when booking?  I was never asked when we had the campervan for three years and have booked 6 sites with the caravan this year and have not once been asked what make of van.  I havn't even been asked if it is single axles or twin.  We have a Hobby with the door on the 'wrong' side and no-one has batted an eye lid yet - I guess there's time!  We find it excellent when we join friends with the door on the 'right' side as when we park with the A frame the same way as our friend the doors face each other and our awnings when out mean that we can dodge the rain when crossing over to visit.  If we go to a site on our own we put the van whatever way round is most suitable for both us and any neighbours.  We do have a mover so we can turn it round easily so that the door is on the UK side.

IMHO this 'discrimination' is a bit of a myth.  OK once in a while someone my come across questioning by a site owner when they turn up but this could be said of anyone with any kind of outfit.  Usually it's to do with access and finding a big enough pitch.  I've encountered dozens of visitors from France, Germany and the Benelux countries who have arrived with a variety of 'vans including huge Tabbarts and Hobbys and they've never encountered any problems.

What I want to know is where are all these people who have been turned away with their Tabbarts, Hobbys and othr big continental 'vans?  If it's so important to them why have they not named and shamed?

 Just did a quick check and found a site Brean Sands :

"What is your policy on makes of tourers accepted on site?
We do not accept LMC, Hobby, Tabbert, Ronaand Weippart"

You’re right scuba – and I stand corrected.  I e-mailed Brean Sands enquiring about arranging a rendezvous with my continental friends (hobby and tabbart owners).  The reply was thus;

“For your information, within the Terms and Conditions of a touring holiday at Holiday Resort Unity, there are five makes of caravan that we do not accept on site, which are Hobby, Roma, Tabbert, Weippart and LMC.

The reason that these particular makes are not accepted on Holiday Resort Unity is that the large majority of these brands are of European manufacture, and the way that they are structured means that the entry point to the caravan is on the opposite side to makes of English manufacture, which in turn affects the way in which our wardens are able to sort our pitches.

Although we appreciate that there may be exceptions within these brands to the structural differences stated above, we have applied this rule across the board to ensure consistency of site admissions.

We are sorry for any inconvenience that this may cause.”

I have asked whether I would be welcomed on their site.  I tour with an Eriba which is not on their list but where of course, “the entry point to the caravan is on the opposite side to makes of English manufacture”.

 I did an online translation of  "Meine Güte! Was ich ist dabei seiend zu tun, wenn ich das Vereinigte Königreich bereisen will, wenn jeder so um meinen deutschen Wohnwagen und die Tür besorgt ist, die auf der falschen Seite ist!" And it came out as this :

My quality! Which I is thereby being to do if I want to bereisen the united kingdom, if everyone is anxious so over to my German camper and the door, which are on the wrong side!
 Must be the online translator it has grammar gremlins lol.

The German text seems to be the outcome of an online translation, or probably someone has not got his German grammar right. It means:
"My goodness! What am I be going to do, when I want to travel the United Kingdom, if everybody is so concerned about my caravan and the door, which is oin the wrong side.".

Having said this, I never have encountered any problems with my Hobby. If necessary, I just disconnect and push it onto the pitch with the A-bar first. Will make sure to avoid Brean Sands, though. Or probably just go there and try, and take the opportunity to have a good rant at them...

Look out

Chris

As I said in my earlier post I e-mailed Brean Sands and said;

“If I understand you correctly you do not welcome continental caravans because the door is on the 'wrong' side.  I use an Eriba and of course the "entry point to the caravan is on the opposite side to makes of English manufacture" does this mean I would not be welcome even though my caravan is not on your list?”

The reply from Brean was;

“After speaking to the manager, we will accept your caravan, due to the fact that it has not been included on the list in the terms and conditions. However, we may not be able to accept it in the future as it may be added to that list for next year.”

Obviously this is a site that doesn’t want or need visitors from Europe.

Its a myth about German vans, only Hobbys and Tabberts tend to get funny looks. Also dont tow with a transit van as that is likely to make people drag their kids away from you.

However the wrong side door reason given is absolute crap - it's just an excuse  to keep travellers off site but they can't say it as this can be classed as discriminatory under the Race Relations laws. No site has ever had a problem with me, and we've done CC, C&CC and non club sites, and no one cares about our wrong door.

Think of it logically, all club pitches are designed to be on with the centre line being with the van/awning attachment point. It matters not which side the awning is on as there is no difference in distance. I love the fresh grass we always get with our awning!

The only time it was a minor problem is on Haven sites as they have a U shape hard standing set up - but they just told me to pitch in hitch end first.

This has been well discussed so Ill calm down, but wrong side doors mean nothing. Does this mean that sites such as this narrow minded one wont let foreign people pitch. Very continental. A good job sites in Europe arent so narrow minded about us!

People should boycott Brean Sands as they are not embracing the spirit of european caravanning. I must admit Im like Chris and I fancy going down there to just have a go at them.

If they want to stop travellers then simply ask for Switch/Credit card payments only. That will soon sort that problem out.

Carrand - dont let this drop - ask them how this affect 'pitches and wardens' - Id love to hear the explanation as it actually cant affect a thing.

The haven site at greenacres ask to have the door pointed in a particular direction and quote fire regulations.  I don't think they are bothered  which side it is fitted so long as they are parked up to comply.  Not sure why it would be important to have the doors in the same direction.

Its this stupid idea that if you have the hitch near the road you can pull a flaming caravan away from the rest.. yeah right..
