Hi Corsetta,

Just bought my first caravan a few weeks ago after many years of tenting. My budget was what i could lay my hands on and there are bargains to be had. Got mine off e bay and cost me under 500 quid. A 1985 Sprite Muskateer, decent condition for year, 4/5 berth, No hot water, electrics, no damp or leaks,  toilet, electric pump for cold water, no over but 2 rings and a grill, fridge (3way) Full awning, loads of extras so yes you can get a decent caravan for around a 1000, or less. Just go and look at it first and see what you are getting for your money. If I get 2/3 years out of mine I will be happy and then upgrade. As well as E bay look on a site called Preloved, similar to e bay but not an auction, more adverts of just about anything second hand. loads of caravans on there in all areas of the uk. Good hunting.

I bought my 25 year old Elddis Hurricane off ebay for £560 and I'm delighted with it. Came with a rimini awning, new fridge, oven, grill & hob, hot and cold water with built-in pump, shower. Only thing it didn't have was a cassette toilet but I bought a porta-potti for £35 on t'internet which does the trick.  Seems to be damp-free and generally in good overall condition. See my gallery for pics. Been away twice now and had 4 in it both times, 2 in the van and 2 in the awning, and had a great time.  As numerous folk on here have said, there are loads of older vans out there with plenty of life left in them. I fully intend to keep mine for 2 years and I'll probably get nearly all my money back if I look after it as good as the previous owners did.

My first caravan was £1000.00 for a four berth ace courier. We had a few electric problems, no damp and loved it for six summers.
Sold it to a friend for £700.00 last month with electrics fixed and went out and spent £3000.00 on one with [what we didn't know had] damp LOL!

we have just bought a 5 berth with shower, hob, sink, fridge etc for £700 (It is old...20 in fact) but it suits us.

We did look at loads though, I would recommend buying privately as dealers charge a fortune
