I would simply not pay that kind of money unless it involved a seasonal pitch especially all those miles from home.

From what you say Bill I would assume that it does otherwise I'd say you were slightly dotty or you had more money than sense!!!!

Am sitting ompatiently waiting for caravan to arrive in March having got a good trade in deal for the conway cruiser! Now then, we need to have some storage set up beforehand as it's against the leasehold here to store a van - drive isn't big enough for the car - the cruiser overan the pavement! We've seen a couple of places in Cambridgeshire so not too far away. If anyone can reccommend storage or a nice site with seasonal pitching in the region of a 40 mile radius from Letchworth area I'd be grateful. We did go hunting at the end of the summer when this was all a pipe dream but the caravan show turned it into a reality and it'll be here before we know it (want it NOW!) after all - Christmas will be over in 4 weeks.....

Thanks for any help/advice!

Like you, I live in North Herts and I've tried them all and the best one by a country mile is the one at Commons Wood CC site in Welwyn Garden City. I'm currently on there and for 2008 the fee is £510.00. Expensive but the best. Tel: 01707 260786. You have to be a Caravan Club member to use this site and I think there may be a bit of a waiting list.

Here are the others I have used.

Summerhouse Farm is just off the A505 about three miles to the east of Royston. This is a CaSSOA bronze site.
Tel: 01763 261766.

Woodwells Farm. This is managed by Dacorum Borough Council tel: 01442 867828 and the contact there is Jane Alexander. The only trouble with this one is that it is quite close to the Buncefield Oil Depot and when that went up a couple of years ago, I think it took quite a lot of caravans with it! Working on the assumption that lightning never strikes twice in the same place it's quite a well run site very close to the M1.

Cole Green Caravan Storage Site, The Old Coach Road, Cole Green, Hertford SG14 2NL. Tel: 01707 257267 and speak to Mrs Wheatley. Mrs Wheatley is a very nice elderly, spritely lady and she has VERY strict rules which she enforces with a rod of iron.

Poplars Farm Caravan Storage, Rabley Heath Road, Rabley Heath, Welwyn. I last used this site in 1996 and left it after my caravan was broken into while being stored there. I can't give you much information about this one - you'll have to research it a bit.

Finally there's one on Wilbury Hills Way in Letchworth. This is provided specifically for residents of Letchworth and is run by the Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation. Coming from the Hitchin direction, it's on the left a couple of hundred yards past the Wilbury Pub. Can't comment on this one but from the outside it looks well organised.

I hope you find this of some help.

Good luck,

Vic

Ideally we'd like a seasonal pitch with winter storage not too far away. Have researched the Heritage Foundation one as I thought I might be able to wiggle in but I'm not a resident so that's out. Have found a site the other side of Cambridge but it has UHU on it's seasonal field which would mean us not using half the stuff we've bought a van for! Going to have a look anyway but again we go down Bath way couple of times a year and that would add at least another hour to the journey each way (this summer on 'floody Friday' it took us 8 hours instead of 3). I know I can't have it all but I find if I ask I get more info than surfing the net!

That's what we have managed to find again about 15 mins away but the idea of a seasonal pitch is that I can run up there on my own for a day or two not have to move anything but we do want to be away for weekends and for a summer break. Most of the sites with seasonal pitches in a reasonable range mileage wise are fully booked for next year or we have to move off at least once a month and we can't guarantee that.

My brother has a van in Wales and he goes whenever he can but he does not want to tour with it and it takes him 3 hours+ to get to it.

If we went to the same area every year, what you're suggesting would be a good idea but we rarely ever go to the same place twice on the bounce. It can be France, Cornwall, Hampshire, Dorset, Wales, the Lake District - we never know. With this in mind such huge additional distances would be involved that any savings made in storage would probably be gobbled up with additional fuel charges.

Also we like to be able to check the 'van out regularly which we wouldn't be able to do if stored some distance away.

I appreciate what you're saying but currently your way wouldn't be right for us.

Cheers!

Vic
