"well you might be able to pull 3.5 tons with your Disco legally but i wonder how quickly you could stop my friend in an emergency  3.5tons pushing 2.5 tons rather you than me pal"

How would anyone pull horse trailers with horses in?  Its a lot to do with how you drive.  Our caravan has a max. permissible weight of 1000kg but I still give myself room to stop and use sensible speeds.  If you are donig 70mph and have to stop suddenly there is a lot more force on the coupling and towing vehicle than if you are doing 40 - 50 mph, as you would be doing towing horses.  Don't forget we are talking about braked trailers as well so when the towing vehicle brakes then so does the trailer.

You are better with the same weight on 2 axles rather than 1, you have double the brakes and tyres, and naturally wants to keep straight.

Take the p..s all you like BARKS , while you may have a fairly suitable match with your Ford Galaxy & Bailey Senator Carolina  but you obviously dont think that car and caravan compatibility is  that important if your last post is anything to go by

We towed our twin axle with a Volvo S80 kerbweight 1650 kgs.  Caravan maxed out at 1650kg.  Quite permissible and well within the law.  The 85% is only a guideline.  A Rover 75 should have no problem as long as the caravan fully loaded does not exceed the kerbweight of the car.

Also it does not always work out that the bigger caravans weigh more. Many of the newer smaller caravans weigh a lot more than our 1986 twin axle. Our friend has a newer van which weighs more than ours unladen but is 7 feet shorter.

I see

that a lot of people on here are assuming that all twin axles are heavy our Lunar is less than some of the single axle Baileys ect.  Why do people allways think that twin axles are very heavy.
