Last year i purchased a useful book published by the AA, Roadside Cafes & Truckstops (ISBN 0 7495 4675 1 ) Has a selection of Cafes across the country and also mentions where Caravans are welcome. Hope this helps.
We went to the one by Exeter Racecourse mentioned above a week ago. It was without doubt the foulest lunch experience we have ever had.
The place was filthy, it took ages to get served it and the food was all undercooked. We had to go and fetch a high chair from a store room ourselves (at the waiters instruction) and then I had to get the detol out to clean it it was so dirty.
It did look like school kids were running it and to boot they were really unfriendly.
I dont think we will be going to a Little Chef again any time soon.
i prefer to make some rolls up before i leave home , or if i want some warm soup ,it only takes 2 mins to turn the gas on , less chance of food poisoning to ruin my holiday
Are you allowed to use gas on a motorway service station?.
We are only doing one stop for toilet (well one planed stop) and eats and as it will be around dinner so we have decided to take sandwiches and flasks.
We used gas in our caravan to make a cuppa. We have also used a portable bbq to cook bacon at motorway services for breakfast at Easter at Gordano services n the M5!!
the problem with most food outlets is the fact that the money men think cooking is easy. with a love of food it is, but all the alienated, overpressurised people working in these places just can,t cut the mustard and with cheap ingredients as well its a disaster waiting to happen.
go to the super markets before you travel and make up a picnic and enjoy.
Unfortunately, this is the reason that motorway services don't like caravanners, and why the parking facilities provided for us are usually appalling. They know that they don't get much revenue (if any) from us, as we just stop to use the loos, eat out own food, and drive off.
I'm not criticising - I do it too, as the prices in services are ridiculous, but I can't see many places improving the parking arrangements for caravanners for this reason.
I love these old posts, I arrived at this one following a trip down memory lane after recently watching “Big Chef Takes On Little Chef” a 14 part TV series from 2009 now available to watch on YouTube.
I have many fond memories of visiting “Little Chef” from my work as a sales rep during the 80’s, 90’s and by 2018 they had all closed down.
I was on expenses of course, so the over priced menu was never an issue, great places for meeting clients, and often I would stay in the nearby Travelodge if work was taking me up to Scotland or down South.
End of an era really, and I can’t say that I ever had a bad experience.
Many years since I last ate in a Little Chef. Must be 30 at least. Have they all gone now? I don't remember even seeing one for some time. What I do remember though is that the food was nothing at all special and very over-priced.
Travelodges on the other hand I find are very good on the whole. I have stayed in them many times, especially the one at Gatwick. When we used to go abroad and had a morning flight, we used to stay there as it was only 5 minutes on the bus to the terminal. Always warm, clean, and comfortable. If you book early enough you can get some real bargains too. One year the two of us got a decent room there for just £9 for the night.
