The feeling safe bit is probably the primary concern of those who have never tried it, but in reality, you are very rarely alone, If you find a good spot, by 9pm or so, you will have been joined by like minded folks and the comradery between you is usually much more so than you find on the average campsite.
Folks share information about where they were he night before and where they hope to be the following night.
Wildcampers/caravanners, "Recreational Nomads" , have a common interest in keeping the hobby going and Safety and Knowledge are key elements in doing that.
