When I bought my caravan (recommended price £18K+) I approached three main dealers after an internet price search.

First dealer (local) told me the price was the price, and if I wanted discount I could go elsewhere and get one.

Second dealer (local) offered a small discount and said that if we didn't buy from them we could sing for our suppers if we ever wanted service or warranty work doing.

Third dealer, 150 miles away, offered nearly £3K discount, friendly salesman, couldn't have been more helpful at handover, and gave me his mobile in case I had any problems.

Guess who got the business.

Provided the first dealer was willing to do warranty work on caravans not sold by him then the third dealer would get the business, yes?

If the first dealer wasn't willing to do warranty work on 'vans not sold by him either then the second dealer would get the business, yes?

Unless you wern't bothered about towing the caravan 150miles for warranty work, then the third dealer, yes?

Unless the third dealer was Glossops, of course.

Before making a major purchase I always do my research on anything that is relevant.

But when I go to look at the item(s) I play dumb initially, and say I know little about ( say ) caravanning and would like their advice, and wait for the salesperson to run his sales pitch.

I question the sales pitch still portraying some ( but not all ) false ignorance.

An unscrupulous salesman would probably then try to take advantage of my false ignorance in order to get a sale and their commission, but they would also then reveal their true colours ( by possibly making false claims ) to someone who had researched in depth without the salesman's knowledge.

The salesmen who didn't try to take advantage and portrayed true facts, would then be worth a second visit if what they were selling was what I was looking for and the price was within the bounds I had set myself.

I learned this technique 40 years ago from an experienced ( and self build ) amateur radio operator who went to buy a hi-fi at a ( then ) major chain of electronic retailers who are now defunct.

I wonder why - well one of the reasons will be that they told him a load of bo11ocks in the sales pitch.
And they probably did this often.

Obviously there is more to it than this, but it sure sorts the men from the boys.

Colin

Similar to my technique. Never let on how much you know and wait for the bulls**t. If it starts then you know you have a dodgy sales person.

Like your choice of towcar, it's what I use too.
