The political lobby against 4x4s will continue to mount and motor manufacturers will take heed (or go bust-whichever comes first)
Caravans will have to get lighter or the industry will go down the pan as well, a heavy tow vehicle will not then be necessary so the argument lessens in their favour.
The writer also made the assumption that all single axle caravans are not heavy. Mine has an MTPLM of 1450kg. there are not many family saloons that could match that at 85%.

Sold our Grand Cherokee Ltd just before we decided to buy the van due to the increasing costs, found matching what we wanted with the Volvo difficult.
If we move up to a FB model will look to keep Volvo but buy an old 4x4 to tow the van safely, dont want or need a people carrier. Unlike many continental vans we seem to want\demand more creature comforts in our vans and that adds to the weight. Easy to tow if you have little or no weight for bathroom or kitchen!
It would appear that most of us are in agreement,we all tow legally and more importantly safer when using our 4x4`s
How many times have we been on site and watched a family saloon/estate car complete with 3 kids, bikes and the dog turn up towing a twin axle van.and thought how !!!!
then thought if he got into trouble how on earth would the outfit cope.
these are the people that normally pass you at 70mph and then end up littering the M5 hard shoulder on bank holidays causing miles of tailbacks and giving us all a bad reputation.

One of the other things that makes me angry is the fact that as I drive an X-Trail, it must be dirty because it is big. Having spoke with some of the people who said this at work some of them have been amazed at the fact mine is £210 for the year and yet my co-workers new Lotus Elise and anothers Alfa Romeo 146 are the same road tax because they are dirtier than mine. How ignorant some people are.

Agree with you there , perhaps there should be more enforcement regarding these unsafe outfits .
i.e. More roadside weighbridge checks
(oops probably opened a can of worms by saying this)
I once owned a Shogun and Lunar Delta twin axle, I proceeded to pull 3 other vans from there rain sodden pitches before departing myself,I am now back to the fold with a new to me caravan and Jeep Grand Cherokee and going away this wekend for the 1st time. Wonder if I will be the Guardian Angel again?
As long as I can afford the extortionate tax and mounting deisel bill, I would not be without a 4X4 for the safetey and security it gives whilst towing.
We tow with a 4x4 BMW X3 and on average get a fuel consumption of 30 mpg - some old petrol bangers dont get this when driving around they should be penalised as well as us!!! plus we have a 1.0 litre VW polo very econmical but I certainly know what I feel safer in.
