Just got back from a caravan site down Torquay way , had a fully serviced pitch , our water valve/float froze in the water hog ( took it out and it was covered in ice ) and when we emptied it you could hear the ice inside the barrel, though i didn't see any come out . This happened at minus one degree ( that's the temperature the weather man said it was last night ) . I think i'll be wrapping my water hog up from now on .
If the waterpump freezes, it is likely that the expanding ice will crack the filter housing. Apart from expense/los of water facility, there is a good chance for water ingress when the unit thaws.

We've got one of the insulated aquaroll covers from bags2cover and it works a treat, we went away with some friends this weekend who couldn't understand why I bothered fitting the cover, they changed their minds in the morning when they had no water and we did!!!! Bet they bought one this week!
Definitely worth making sure you've got the red Propane gas as well!
Can't beat a bit of winter caravanning, quieter sites and less traffic!!
Out of interest? How do you fill your onboard tanks in a caravan?
Aqua rolls and waste hogs have almost become defacto standard, I have thought caravan designers have been slow to incorporate the storage of watercontainers and watercontainers use into caravan design ie outside lockers so you don't have to bring wet containers into the van and of course to prevent freezing.
We have used our van in Aviemore over the winter. We have had the water freeze once. Since then we use a block of polystyrene for the Aquaroll to sit on (Found it lying about) And simply cover the container with one of my old jackets - handy because you can run the pump and hose up the sleeve - never had a problem since - but do like to keep it topped up.
"If we expect freezing temperatures during the day, we are going to try using a fish tank heater tube taped to the water inlet pipe."
You may find the fish tank heater blows the fuse, only know this because my mother turned our house heating off whilst we where away over half term, the house got that cold the heater needed to be on all the time and it blew the fuse and most of the fish died.
We went away in sub zero conditions in the UK this year in our caravan and suffered frozen water in the pipe from the external water container and the vans wall. It was a nightmare because i wanted a cup of tea and cold not have one! Now we fill the kettle the night before just in case.... And the waste has never frozen in our van - just the fresh water in - but remember if the external pipes freeze there is no hot water either - unless you remembered to fill the kettle and pour warm (but not boiling) water onto the external water pipes!!!
