Thats not what you said, in your first post you actually said they would have had the blow out and "nowt else" which is of course complete rubbish.

Tyron bands stop a deflated tyre coming off the rim in the event of a puncture or other deflation.

In the event of a blow out where the tyre explodes or a n other object ripping the tyre apart ie disintegration Tyrons would probably not make any difference at all to the end result. I have seen the results of that.

They may stop the remnants of the tyre carcass coming off the rim which when you think of it may even be worse because they would then be held in place and flapping about!!!

Only experienced 1 puncture in 40+ years of caravaning.  It was a blowout with tyron bands fitted - tyre was completely shredded but apart from a few rubber marks, which polished out, no damage.  Fitted alloys to current van but sold on the original wheels including the tyron bands, after the above incident could not see any advantage in having them fitted.

We had a puncture in 2007 - on a wheel fitted with Tyron bands, and whilst the tyre did stay on the rim the shredded reinforcement in the tyre caused some damage to the underside of the van.    I don't think Tyron bands would have prevented the damage - in fact I think they may add to it because there's no sudden change in the caravan so you don't 'feel' the puncture and therefore tend not to react or to stop as quickly.   This no doubt makes for safer motoring at speed, but doesn't help prevent damage to the van.

As I said earlier, though, I do think the caravan could probably be easily be repaired within the £2,000 budget offered by the insurance company - so the OP could easily come out of it better off overall.

Back to the original problem-try these guys http://www.plasticshowerspecialists.com/

They have done a warranty repair on our shower tray-when some fat git pushed the waste through the floor when showering (me!), a phone call costs nowt & they will give you a straight answer at least.

See you all soon, Bernard

you never said who your insurance company is  as far as I see it if the assessor said it's  non repairable then you should get what you insured your van for

Hi blondieandi, I don't think Avondale's are necessarily worthless but, probably due to instances like the problem you've encountered with your insurance company, consumer confidence has definitely plummeted.  Two weeks ago we sold an ABI Monza and traded to an Avondale Rialto and the lack of confidence definitely reflected in the purchase price.  6 months ago the Rialto was something we could only dream of!  We bought it on ebay and the seller (having failed to sell at a higher starting bid on an earlier auction) set the bid price at less than half of its true value.  We bought at a fraction of what it was worth really.  Great for us but I felt bad for the seller.  I agree with the comments above that if you possibly stamp your feet enough (and if anyone in the same position joins in with the feet stamping) that the insurance companies may be shown to be simply hiding behind the 'Avondale in administration' excuse.  On the flip side, is £2k a generous offer?  To be honest, I wouldn't have a clue what it could cost to repair!  One thing I do know is we considered if there were any risks in buying an Avondale but realised, again as mentioned above, we probably would have had a harder struggle getting hold of parts for our 1992 Monza.  We have got a cracking Avondale caravan for comparatively very little money.  Good luck in your search for a shower tray.  Hopefully someone can help on here.

If they are offering you £2000 & keep the van, it seems like a good deal to me. You could pay somewhat less than £2k on ebay for a '96 caravan so I'm sure you could sort out some sort of a repair for a lot less than that.

I thought Tyron bands were used on 4x4 vehicles to prevent tyres coming off the rims when running low air pressures off road in mud/sand conditions. I cant see any point in using them on the road either with a caravan or car.

Its like treating the illness(ie old perished tyres)rather than preventing the illness(ie fit new tyres if cracked or in any case after 5 yrs)

Thanks for all your advice, the tyres werent old btw my OH is a manager of a tyre services company so we arent so silly not to check tyres or replace when neccesary we can afford new ones and are pretty careful. The guys that came out to replace both tryes said it virtually unknown and we did wonder if fowl play was involved as there was a nail in one tyre but for both to go was just our (3 year) run of bad luck. The insurers were through the C&CC and we have been back onto them today and told them we werent happy, the guy said he knows where we are coming from and that we can get the van fixed we said we have tried and if they can get it fixed to take it away and get it sorted. Basically they dont want the problem and expect us to get on with it. Granted £2000 does seem good to keep the van but there is 2 sections of floor to be taken out and replaced water heater repaired, wheel arches repaired, outside trim replaced, Shower tray, waste pipes, etc etc. Yes we can use the van without a shower but why should we WHY did I pay £4000 insurance. We told the insurers that if Avondales are like Rover cars (as it was compared to) why arent they teling all Avondale owners to drop the price of their vans insurance as they are worth nowhere near what they were. My caravan is a lot nicer than some a lot newer, even the assessor said it was a nice van for the year and it looks great inside with everything modern vans have in. We saw one for sale for £3950 the same on caravan finder. i know Avondales are a bargain but I wouldnt buy another. The assessor told us a tale of a guy who had a fairly new one and the back panel was smashed into and he got offered virtually nothing compared to what he paid. We are waiting for the insurers to get back they said they will look onto it for us. Id love it if they took it and got it sorted as I love it, otherwise Ill get all the repairs costed including a shower tray specially made ( as some one suggested thanks!!) and see what the price is.Ill be on pins when Im next going away wondering if it will happen again. Thanks again for all your help!!

Just another point I was reading a story in Practical caravan magazine about a guy that had Tyron bands on his tyres and had a blow out. he said that although the tyre stayed intact it was the tread flapping about that caused the damage. It went right through the floor and wrecked all his gas pipes and electric cables. ( lucky mine werent damaged we had enough problems lol !!) He said he wrote a letter to his caravan company suggesting that they secure metal plates in a section under the vans where the tyres are he reckoned this could prevent a lot of damage and ruined caravans. What does everyone think??

Our caravan was damaged right at the angle of the rear of the wheel arch, and the external plastic trim.  Our tyre was totally shredded - much more damage than you would have expected to the tyre.  I did try to post some pictures on here, but can't get the links to work.

I suppose there are many modifications which would make caravan damage much less - but I can't imagine the manufacturers making any changes, especially at the moment.

No it is not actually, Have you seen the vans?? I would post some pictures of it if I had time(Im off to work soon) the van is VERY modern. The insurer even said the £2000 isnt the vans value just the cost of repairs the van is worth £3800. I had it slightly over insured. I doubt all the repairs will be done for £2000 though my friends told us that it cost £1800 for a corner of her van to be repaired which needed new floor in and trims etc. At least their insurers got theirs done ours said they cant get the parts so how do they expect us to??

Any way you are probably right seems to me that the caravan isnt worth a lot after Avondale went bust!! I wouldnt insure it for loads more than it was worth I know you only get the market value for it.
