I think most people have covered the majority of the safety stuff, but I would recommend a pad and pencil. Then you can note down all the stuff you can see other people have that you'll want to buy.

On our first trip for 3 days we went away with all the usual safety stuff, 2 chairs and a wind break

After 2 days we had 3 full pages of stuff to buy. And it's still growing...

(examples ... Awning, bench seat, indoor George Foreman grill, cooler box, as well as microwave, electric kettle, headtorch ... The list goes on, and never ends...)

It's brilliant being addicted to this stuff..

Then of course to some the TV, Sat Dish, DVD etc. come under "essentials"

Also bedding, sleeping bags etc.

You will also need to be aware of weight. All caravans have a maximum weight for added items and the noseweight may need to be watched also so I suggest you start light and add what you really need.

Satalite & tv - whatever you forget make sure your tv remote is packed - most tellys cannot be tuned in without it if you are using normal tv aerial!

Corkscrew - nothing worse than looking at the wine & not drinking it!

If you have ipod & a fm transmitter for it & kids get the story nory podcasts on it before you go away because the kids love a story!

Red gas bottles - blue ones are useless in the cold British winter!

Mobile phone & charger so you can tell your mates how much fun you are having!

Crockery and cutlery - ever tried eating steak, peas & mash without them?

Most important - sense of adventure - do something you never do at home just for fun!

Just go. On your first weekend away, you will discover what you will need. Initially, as long as you can make a cuppa, keep warm and comfy at night, you can assemble things you need. Or you could buy everything, and may waste a lot of money. Enjoy.

Forget it. I bought one. It's still in the shed. I've never taken it with me and I've never used the xtra iron that lives in the van either.Honestly creases are insignificant to having room for more booze

a blinking ironing board, you are on a campsite, you are meant to look a bit scruffy :-)

always pack extra sleeping kit and never rely on the ehu for warmth, it can trip or fail

We also got

  • an electric kettle and a toaster, which get lots of use...just cheapo supermarket ones.  Saves using the gas all the while if you are an EHU.
  • Small fan heater, £10 from Argos
  • Small metal meat dish and baking tray for the oven (lighter than pyrex type)
  • Plastic storage baskets (to fit lockers). We have one for cleaning stuff, another for tinned food, etc. etc. and makes for moving things in and out of the van much easier.  Only cost about £1 for 3.

Don't have an ironing board though!  (Hateful job, even when I'm at home)  We do have one of those folding clothes line/dryer contraptions and that is very useful on longer breaks.  Just put it together and it comes with pegs to secure it to the ground.   (£15 from Jacksons at Old Arley - also on ebay).
