Hi chips 94

Ive had my Bailey Provance ( series 5 07 model )recently serviced by a bailey approved dealer . They found small cracks to the rear panel . I had to take it to a bailey  approved repair company. They replaced it free of charge (bailey approved the repairs first and even called down to check the job out - so i was told). One of the staff told me that the reason for the cracks was due to how it was put together . Apparently the rear panel is `nailed` on and if the nails bend or not exactly go in straight then over time the cracks appear. Every stage of the caravan build is signed off by its installer so that bailey can check who has assembled it . I had no problems with the repairs due to the fact that my caravan is serviced via an approved dealer . Yes it costs a couple of hundred quid but at least its worth it . I also get the service centre to install differerent items that i require ie external sockets and additional lights because it is down to them if a problem uccurs and doesnt invalidate the guarentee. Its just peace of mind really.

It looks like bad workmanship at the end of the day . the best thing to do ( if it is possible ) is go and see bailey in person - probably at a show . they will assign somone to look into it and you can deal with them directly - Try contacting the bailey owners club as well .

 Good luck !

I am in total support of Chips 94. My van is a Jan 2005 Pagent, purchased from a Bailey dealer in Aug 2007 secondhand & the Bailey Waranty was not transferable.so I use a certified mobile caravan mechanic to carry out the services
If such defects were to appear on my van are you saying that Bailey have no duty of responsability to repair this 2/3 year old van simply because the waranty is void when it would appear to be due either faulty workmanship at manufacture or faulty materials??

My thanks to Billybusa and Oldmrfenwick for their responses.

The response from 'Old chap' should show the direction this post is taking. This is what's needed since Baileys do make wonderful caravans but have this manufacturing fault in the assembly line which they may or may not have cured. This fault should be put right. Either re-call all caravans and check it is okay or on the owner finding the fault Baileys can inspect it and say 'yes' this is caused from our design fault. Not left as it is. Where is consumer protection and where will Baileys reputation be. It is okay saying warranty is there what if cracks appear after year 6. So far the longest I have read about is 3 years.

Todate I have three very good points to help build my case
1) Thompson Plastics and their comments about assembly
2) Comments about how the crack appears by the fitters as quoted by Billybusa and Pokypie
3) What part of the caravan service checks if a panel is correctly fitted - none since it can be found after the service.
Will keep you updated.

I know the use of hear-say may be questioned but if you have enough people saying it then it can be added to make a case.

One should see this post as a way of getting a manufacturing fault noted and responsibility taken for making it good. Also to find out how long it has been before the crack appeared. Finally I know our caravan had a 6 year warranty when did that start since this fault was apparent in 2004 manufactured caravans

Hello Michael

Further to your email I would suggest you contact Simon at Heather Caravans (01793) 522545 or 07977 486471 who are the people who come out to do repairs here on site.  It was them who first told us about the problem and he deals with Bailey direct.  Hope this helps.

I have a 2003 pageant and just had 5 cracks repaired, i was told that when the van was put together they didnt drill pilot holes first. The guy  removed the screws, drilled new pilot holes and repaired the cracks. He said its very common. It looks as good as new

chips 94 a follow on from my post.I did have water penetration on the front windows of my van which I was told by the dealer who did the repairs under their waranty, was due to failier of the mastic on the front window hangers.
I asked him about the cause of the stress fracture faults & was told that it was down to the panel fixing screw hole's apparently they are undersized & when the screws are put in they in effect cut a thread in the panel which then causes the stress fractures. the cure in the new panel was to oversize the screw hole & fit a nylon type grommet to allow flex in the panel. it was just after this that the new Ranger series with the 3 front windows came out. unfortunatly this fault still seems to be occuring

Hi Chris, Im very pleased with the repairs, the guy removes the screw,  drills a tiny hole at the end of the crack so it doesnt go any further, then repairs it and repaints it. you would never know it was there. He is a mobile service, N.C.C registered & city & guilds qualified with 20 years experience. I store my van at a cc site in Crawley and he works on lots of caravans there.

Cracks are not that obvious, I noticed mine when standing on the wall trying to wash the roof of the van.The small crack is half way between the top light and the jointing strip - on a 2007 Bailey Ranger. All repaired under warrenty.
