We store ours on the front drive.
Its very convenient especially preparing it for the next trip.
However we are not supposed to. Nor are we allowed to keep hens, run a business from home, make any alterations to the property without permission and a few more things!
What am I talking about?
Deeds of covenant!
Worth checking especially if you have busy body neighbours!

The covenant is not down to the neighbours complaining, the only people who can enforce it are the people who had it placed there. Which simply means that unless the original instigators of the covenant are the local Authority when they gave planning permission then several years down the road from the building of the house when the developers have moved off the site they are very unlikely to care less what you do.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

We did leave our van in site storage for a couple of seasons, it got damaged & the damage, in the conditions of storage, was down to us. I didn't like that very much so we now have ours on the drive, have done now for 12 years. It's lovely to be able to go out to it whenever we feel like it. I know it's sad but, we often take a cuppa out there & just sit in it. We lost one van for a short while so, for security on this new one we do the following.

We've got a big RSJ post concreted 30 inches into the ground with a ball hitch bolted to it, the nuts holding the Ball hitch on are welded so it can't be removed. The van gets hitched to this & the jockey wheel & clamp removed. We use an Al-Ko lock & two leg locks on rear stabilisers. I'm getting a piece of steel welded to the rim on a steel spare rim to go on the side opposite the Al-Ko lock.

We far prefer having our van at home.

I too have had same thoughts of moving my van onto my drive as the cost of storage I pay jumped by £100 to £295. Owner claimed that he had to increase the spacing between the caravans for health and safety reasons when in reality he was loosing customers and this was a way of lumping the loss of custom onto the others.

But reading one of the many posts on this topic, someone raised what to me is a very valid point in that due to the fact the van is on the drive, when not there it is obvious we are away from home! I never gave that a thought and with burglary on the increase in my estate (big jump in last 6 months) I think I will just start looking elesewhere to store the van. Great pity as it would have obvious benefits by being at home such as cleaning it - doing odd jobs etc.

Thats an interesting point Jeeps, my neighbours store theirs on their front garden, they love on the top corner of a close, its glaringly obvious when they are away!

I do know someone that stored theirs behind fencing and it was not so obvious,

Dirty beggars! They obviously don't mind people watching!!

trust you to nitice my error!  They live on a corner.

We moved into the house where we live about a year ago, I brought the van up to get ready for our hol on Monday and put it on the front drive, it fit's nicely but looks bloody awful in my opinion. Next door is trying to sell his house so out of courtesy I informed him before I brought it up and told him it was only for a week or so, he had no problem but I thought it was nice to ask.

That is my problem. I think they do look awfull and out of place. Looks like we may be leaving it where it is in storage. Can't cope with all the security posts etc etc. Will make a decision when we have a large hedge removed and a fence put in.

If we left the hedge then it would not be seen much but we need to remove the hedge to make the space. Bit of a dilema!!!!!

Certainly looks like opinions are very mixed.

Ours sits on the front drive but is a small van and is partly obscured by a tree.  We also have a horse trailer and 2 cars on the drive, which will be joined shortly by another car when my stepson gets his first car.  We are not overlooked by the houses opposite and the only neighbout it affects was fine about it when I asked her before getting it.

Due to the fact my drive is totally open with no way of "hiding" the van I have decided to leave it in storage and take the advice of Jeepster re if off the drive, it gives visibility to the thieves that you are away from home. Can't be doing with another break-in even though last one was 15 years ago!

Thanks Jeepster for bringing this to my attention

'Sorry but I wouldn't want that lot next to me!!!!

Everybody is welcome to their opinion, but as no-one else is affected its my choice.  I couldn't be bothered with a van if I had to pick it up from storage every time.

It all depends on how narrow your road is and how the houses are set out.  Perhaps you live on a narrower street overlooked by other houses where everyone is in each others face, who knows - it is a different situation in towns compared to the country.

If we kept ours on the drive it would worry the life out of me.  We have a green area opposite and the kids playing football is a nightmare.

Ours sits at one side of our drive, which is about 10 metres wide, and is screened from our immediate neighbours by their Leylandii. We have no houses immediately opposite.

Our neighbour the other way can see the top of the van from their driveway, though not from their house. They have 3 cars, an old Land Rover thing, 2 huge trailers and a quad bike, so would not have the nerve to say anything about our caravan!

We have no restrictions on keeping the van there anyway, we did check before buying it, we would not have bought a van if we could not keep it at home.

Hi Brian

We don't have any houses opposite as there is a park and a Church so no problem there. We do however live on a reasonably main road which might create a problem. It is the security aspect that bothers me more than anything. At least I know the van is locked behind gates and is only 10 mins away. I have a tracker and alarm on it and can check whenever I want on Google as it sends the co-ordinates to me when I want them.

I agree that it is more handy to have it on the drive which is why I was considering it but it only takes us a few minutes to transfer the food and clothing from car to van. Also it will be stuck there all over the winter when we aren't using it.

One main problem is OH is dead against it so looks like the decision is made!!!!!!!

My stepson and his girlfreind usually occupy the house when we are away.  The wife worries more about her horses than house security when we are gone for more than a few nights.

Well we took the plunge today and moved the van onto our front now thet the hedge has been removed and the fence erected. The decisive factor was the bill received yesteday from the storage site. Gone up by £50! We now are having the drive finished off at the end of the month so it should be OK. It does look a bit odd but I am sure we will get used to it once we able to move it into a permanent position . It was great fun getting it on the drive as half the town decided to come down the road and a car parked oposite just as we arrived. Hey Ho!

Could be fun getting it off on Tuesday when we go away for a fortnight!!!!

Thanks for all your comments.
