Geist caravans have the door on the right side for UK, and I am sure I have seen other caravans that are the same.

Yes, my Burstner has a UK layout.  There are some Hymers too and possibly others.

Having just totted up the number of times I have pitched my "wrong-sided" van in the last 8 seasons it comes out to 168 times.
I recall only once being asked very politely to put it on the pitch front end in, so as not to face another awning, but I have yet to be refused permission to stay anywhere.
So zero refusals in 168 I think indicates its not as widespread a problem as some think.

I think it's only likely to be a problem where the pitches are narrow, you are to the left of a UK layout van (viewed from the road) and you both have or want to erect an awning.   If you don't pitch a contintental layout van "nose first" and have to pitch near the edge of your pitch to have space for the awning, you might not have the spacing required by the fire regs and the site's insurance/licencing between your van and your neighbours.

Sitting on the fence slightly on this one, however I do know a few people with German Vans and are over the moon with them, we have a 2007 UK built swift which we love to bits,  however there have been silly build quality issues / loose trim, ill fitting cassette toilet door, dodgy water heater, gas regulator buggered etc all been covered by warranty and fixed and yes works fine now, but for how long has left me wondering.

We have looked at other vans in great length over the 8 years vanning and I have to admit I don't think we will buy a brittish van again, the german ones look solidly built, do seem to be far more reliable and have far less problems than some of the brittish ones.

Now I am not saying all brittish vans are rubbish as I do own one and have made my excuses for faults on ours in the past, however I am a realist and when you look at the hard facts and talk to owners the German ones come up trumps.

Now having said that just watch us next time buy a dodgy german one and I'll be complaining and want to come back to good old blighty vans!

We are seriously thinking of buying a 2005 Dethleffs 25 ft caravan to use as a Residential tourer on a site fairly close to home. We can tow this with a 4.2 Toyota Landcruiser VX so could change sites easily, and will still be able to keep our Coachman Laser for general touring....

German built vans are not immune to problems, we have also had gas regulator fail – but that’s not to do with if it is UK or German built, isn’t that more to do with a problem with the fixed regulators?

I think buying a new caravan is like a new house until you live in it you can’t find all the problems out, we had teething troubles with our Geist but also with our Eldis.

A tap failed on the Geist, which was a bit, more of a problem as the toilet and everything is on same system so we couldn’t have water in the van – luckily we were on a site with facilities. We now have a fold up water carrier with a tap; we take with us, which can sit on the side for hand washing, should history ever repeat itself! Plus a bottle of water to flush the toilet! In case the regulator should go we have a little meths stove and a charcoal BBQ!

Finding a good dealer that looks after you when you have a problem is probably more important that anything – with both the Geist and the Eldis we have been with dealers who have quickly and efficiently helped us by sending the part or agreeing to pay cost of mobile repair when we were on holiday.

We like our Geist as it feels so solid, it doesn’t have an electric hotplate or external BBQ point and some of the things that UK vans have, but we didn’t feel we need them and if we did we could add them.

Really it’s about finding the caravan that suits you.

J

I have a UK layout 2006 Burstner that is now out of warranty.  I have not needed to make any warranty claims at all.  No loose trim, no ill fitting doors and everything works.   There is a bit of luck involved here too, I think, as the Burstner has the same water heater, heating, fridge, cooker, toilet and electrical systems fitted to many UK vans.

Cheers

Its a shame Burstner have stopped doing caravans for the Uk at present. They would be on our list to look at as someone at our storage has one and he is always raving about it.

My first caravan in 1992 was a belgian De Reu we kept it two years and were never asked to park it nose first or in any way different from the way that others parked. I bought my current Hymer van with a continental sided door in 2003 and after having spent nearly 500 nights in it since then I have again never ever been asked to park it in any way at all, it is not a sibject that ever arises. In general the spacing on a site allows for an awning on one side and a car on the other and since the space taken up by both is very similar there should never be any risk that any particular outfit be closer to any other van than is required by fire regulations.

Would I have another german van, yes, would I buy another Hymer yes but the price of them has risen astronomicaly and almost to the point that I could buy two UK vans with the same design as I would pay for a replacement Hymer. That being the case if I ever consider buying a new van then I will look at what is on offer and pick the one I fancy be it UK or german. In the end all vans will leak, so it is what happens when they leak that matters which is why it pays to buy hymer there is nothing at all in the Hymer walls to rot, as far as I know they are the only vans to be able to make this claim.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013
