About 99% of all LCD televisions have their 240volt to 12volt transformers on the outside these days to save on space - with the tv's being so slim these days. Get yourself a plug the same as the one on the 12volt side of the transformer and wire it into your 12volt in the van. No need to pay silly money for Caravan tellies.

What surprised me is that the staff at our local Comet had no idea!!

Quite a few are AC only now, the smps power supply is built into nearly all of them (cheaper to manufacture), and especially rare to get one above 16" with a separate external smps power supply, i've looked at the back of nearly all the tellys in tesco/comet/currys etc this past month and only one or 2 had DC sockets with external smps power supplies.

be very careful plugging a telly made for the home straight into the vans 12volt supply ,A240volt to 12volt supply pack is stabalised so it delivers 12volts regadless of fluctutations in mains voltage, most caravans 12volt can vary from 12.4 volts up to 13.2 volts depending on Battery state .

I've had the back off the one in my first post already, and it can take over 12v as it has a 12v voltage regulator on the pcb, also looking at the 12v lead kit for this tv on here http://shop.skymediauk.co.uk/shop/fullproduct.asp?pid=13&cid=398 (this tv is the same as the UMC), it's just a simple cable with no logic/voltage regs.

So if you want a 19" that will be safe to use +/- 12v, then this one's fine.

When I said "About 99% of all LCD televisions have their 240v to 12v transformers on the out side" I missed out the word small when describing the LCD tv's.....

My 19" widescreen Goodmans LCD tv came from Curry's some 4 years ago. Bought to sit in our kitchen at home. It was soon re-sited in our AS Duetto campervan. I had a 12v 'adapter' made up in a local shop at cost £4 and we have never looked back. All the 240v powerpack/transformer, that came with it, says is that it takes in 240volts AC and puts out 12volts DC at 5amps.

Even when we find an EHU we still use it the tv on 12v from the onoard system, (it's tidier). The tv has been on when the on board charger is doing it's thing and with the van's engine running. Still the telly works.......

I have pointed a couple of friends in this direction who have not reported any problems. So far?? I reckon if the 12volt feed at the tv end goes in on a plug and is not hard wired, it has to work ......Why go to that much trouble if it doesn't?

You could always send it back under warranty - oops.

The OH has come across a 15.4" made by MEOS. They claim they are made for caravans, tilt, have freeview/dvd and other bells and whistles, look the part, but cost over £200.

Does anyone either have one or know anything about MEOS?

No one decent seems to make them anymore.

Due to panel production costs the majority of LCD tv's are just pc monitors with a tuner board/dvd player etc. a lot of them are 16:10 format, not 16:9 broadcast format, a lot of laptops are now coming with bluray drives, and coupled up with a 16:9 size screen which is 16" and above and are starting to have better contrast, wide colour gamut's, better viewing angles, so these are likely to filter through to the TV sector, so as soon as they are more common place with laptops we are likely to see them in smaller tv's soon.

DaleR,

Referring to your original post on the Kenmark.
You obviously know your tv specs., would you have a look at the available Kenmark range from Comet and comment on the equivilent set with both freeview and dvd?

Have given up trying to find a viewable 16" combi!

Thanks

Hi Rustyfrog,

I did have a look at all the 16" models in comet recently, I have to say they were all pretty poor, Although im thorougly impressed with mine, it's not actually a "Kenmark" it's badged that for comet purposes as that is one of their in house brands, I think the TV was got in as a loss leader for the bank holiday, the other kenmarks bear no similarity to mine what so ever, mine is actually made by a company called UMC/Swisstec. but says Kenmark on the box it came in.

They had a ventura 17" with dvd that the picture looked ok on, the ferguson looked ok too, but that was overpriced at £180

Thanks for that Dale.

We may start over again and go for a 19" dvd/freeview, and forget about trying to get a 16" to fit the van's tv locker.
The locker is in the middle of the van, and is higher than the seats, so we are concerned that the small flat screen will 'black out'.
Back to looking!
