I noticed really bad ruts on the A1/M1 last week, not a road I normally go on. It didn't cause me any drifting problems, the car was rock steady, but my little Bailey was bouncing around a bit. I suppose the Xsara fitted inside the tracks but the van being a bit wider was trying to go in and out of them.

If you can't see the light at the end of the tunnel, just keep going till you go round the bend.
Well, thanks for the replies and advice. I am concluding it is the model of car above anything else. Some have mentioned that their towcar sits between the ruts/tramlines well the Disco is too wide for this so I think this is the most obvious issue. I guess I will have to reluctantly live with it, even more reluctantly change our tow car or just hog the middle lane!
Seriously though still a real concern, a 640 mile round trip last week gripping the steering wheel for dear life in case a new stretch of ruts was approaching was not my idea of a holiday.
I have suffered this nasty rut problem with transit vans and even 7.5t trucks in the past. Only solution i found was to use lane 2. I have never been stopped by the police or the traffic wombles, but if i ever am i will tell them the lane 1 is unsafe for my vehicle and i do not enjoy the instability the ruts are causing. As for hogging the middle lane, 2 reasons not to worry. First is it is alot safer to use lane 2 rather than wobble between hard shoulder, lane 1 & lane 2. Second, almost everyone else on the mways are glued in this lane so it is quite rare to be holding up the traffic, even at the modest 60mph towing limit. As long as lane 1 is used when it is safe to do so who can argue? After all - would you avoid pot holes or sunken drain covers etc if it is safe to do so? I bet the answer is yes so why risk your safety by driving on badly maintained mway roads?
I would disagree to a point about it being the car at fault - although it may have something to do with it.
I have the same issue every year when I drive down to Portsmouth - the van wanders around a bit on the back of the car so I stop and check things out - no problems - when I get to France and get on the better quality auto-routes the problem disappears completely.
The car and van feel far more stable than on the UK roads so I can only assume that it is something to do with the poor maintenance our roads get and the rutting already mentioned.
We tow with a 110 defender and have encounted the same problem with ruts which seem worse on certain parts of the motorway network..... nothing you can do just travel at 55. We have a stabliser fitted so nothing to do with that..... Now we are in a Land Rover Club and plenty of the member have encounted the same as us in Series motors.... Disco's....Freelanders.... 90's.....110's....Range Rovers and Sports so it is a common problem......it just means you have to keep your wits about you when towing.
Nothing you can do about it, its not your driving or the way you have loaded your van, My Isuzu is the same, its the wheelbase of the vehicle, dont worry about it just take your time, as stated try and keep one side of the vehicle clear of ruts as far as poss although every so often you will fall in them and feel a drift.
I notice the ridges a lot more with my Zafira with 17" wheels (225/45 tyres) and a 7' 6" wide Pageant S7 compared to my previous outfit a Civic with 16" wheels (205/55 tyres) and a 7' 2" wide Ranger S5. I will state that they are only noticable, it has not caused any heart in mouth moments.
As with the new car I only towed the Ranger empty to the dealers for trade in, I am not sure which item (or the combination of both) is the culprit.
On non ridged roads the outfit is really stable even in cross winds so it is not the outfit matching that is the issue.
Hi all, while not a frequent user of motorways I've found that the wider your tyres the worse the problem. I've towed with various crewcab pick-ups and certainly the older ones with narrower steel wheels were better. The ruts are annoying as it means we can't let the dog have a turn at driving on the motorway anymore.
Its very interesting this. I had the car looked at last year to see if the shockers or some suspension bushers had gone. because of the car wondering with caravan on. Every thing was ok. I have never thought about this before but looking back i have had the car slowly wondering from left to right now & again in lane one. But never in lane two. More observation next time out.
